: Thinking of getting a Fiesty Ferret off Craigslist...

I've been looking for a new cage for a while now, and someone posted a Fiesty Ferret cage for $75. They're including a Wodent wheel with the cage. I just have a few questions...

Is the bar spacing appropriate for girls, or would I have to make adjustments?
Is the price fair?
The seller said that the bottom tray is broken... I'm going to ask her what she means by this (she said that most animals use litter boxes anyway, so I'm assuming it's just a tear).
And finally... will it fit in my car without being taken apart? I've heard that assembly is a problem with FF's, so I don't want to have to go through any of that!

the bar spacing is nearly an inch wide (7/8 of an inch to be exact)

might pose to be a problem with girls

I've never heard of girls being able to get out of the FF, and I'm on a number of forums where people have the FF. I even have a miniature hairless girl, and she can't even get out... well, I take that back... she's never actually tried to get out, so I can't say that I know that for sure. I actually bought it specifically for my girls because of the small bar spacing.

That is a very good price, as I just paid over $170 for mine. ;)

And about the bottom tray... I don't even use it. I just cover the top of the bars with either fleece or rugs. So if you're willing to work with it, the bottom tray is definitely not a necessity.

As far as assembly... I don't think it'd be likely to fit in your car w/o being taken apart. Mine was the biggest pain to put together, because none of the holes lined up, and furthermore, there were little bits of metal sticking out of the holes. It was just a huge mess.

Definitely a good price, but if it's not what you're looking for, then obviously not worth it. :)

I wish I lived closer to you; I'd lend you my truck to haul it! I had to cram my boys' cage into my sister's car when I first bought it, and it was such a PITA. Unless your cage fits nicely into your car or trunk, I would recommend carrying it home before cramming it into your car. Because once it's in...you have to fight to get it out!

they seem like great cages.

I believe you mentioned you have a FN (ferret nation) cage.

On this forum where so many have the FF cage, did they modify their cages with additional wire?

A small female will be able to go between the bars of a nearly 1 inch bar space. I found that the females that weighed 220g or under could get right through with no trouble at all... at 230 to 240 they got a slight pinch but could wiggle out. Once they got to 250 then they were pretty much in & really could not get out.

I've never seen anybody having modified their FF cage, and the people who I have talked to did not have to modify theirs. I'm definitely not saying that if a small female did not try to get out that she wouldn't be able to. I'd imagine that my very small female would be able to get out if she really wanted to. It's just that, as far as I have seen and heard, it's never been necessary to modify the bars of the FF. Of course, some rats are more determined than others, so some people may have to modify the FF if their rats have their heart set on being free. I guess that I'm just lucky! :P
