My Frankenstein of a rat cage is becoming a hassle. See, it has those shallow removable trays because it came with wire floors that waste was supposed to just drop through. It is a nice sized cage for them but they tend to shove everything out because the trays are just so shallow. There's also nothing but a wire grid at the bottom so when I pull them out, droppings and bedding fall onto my carpet under the cage...so what I'm thinking is that I need a durable kind of plastic that I can cut easily at home so that I can create higher walls around the back and side of the cage and something to cover the bottom to make it more like traditional cage walls, or at least contain the mess to the front where it's easy for me to vacuum. I'm sorry if I'm not explaining this really well. I work third shift and it's kind of like the middle of the night for me, haha.
Also, does anyone know what newspapers use soy ink?

I know I've seen someone's cage where they created pans out of coroplast which is basically cardboard made from plastic. Its the stuff you see all the political "vote for me" yard signs printed on. You can buy large sheets of it at sign printing shops.

unless you live in a third world country, 99.99% of newspapers now use soy ink.

coroplast would do the trick
I've been looking for a source but it seems that everyone around me only sells the little tiny sign sized sheets with the metal stakes already in it.
I want to get full sheets & make an enclosure as well as some wall to catch bedding.... especially for my ferrets. The little devils have been horrible about tossing litter lately.

Coroplast rocks!
There's a link, "build your own C&C cage", if you google that, the site should come up, and on the site, there's a finding materials database- you put in your town/zip code, and it will bring up a list of local shops that sell the bits you need for a C&C cage, including coroplast.
Good luck!

Is this site? http://www.guineapigcages.com/
There is a small square menu on the upper left hand side that is titled "C&C Cage" & then underneath it says "Find Materials"
Been there, the links for my area are old & the stores are no where near me.
I have contacted a lot of print shops & hobby type stores & they all want $60-$75 a sheet or more. That is insane

That's good, we have a free newspaper around here that would be great for free bedding then. I think my beasties have managed to get a hold of a few magazines and newspapers without any harm to them so I guess I needn't worry.
I'll have to pop into my local hardware shop and see what they've got going on in the plastics, otherwise I'll probably just order something online.
A1A (or anyone else), this (http://www.professionalplastics.com/COROPLASTSHEET) website sells a 48x96 sheet for $25.
