it looks great on space, but it doesn't like very fun to clean, but most cages aren't so ...

I cant look as im in work, but you need to check bar spacing on ferret cages, as they are bigger than rats.

Cleaning is definitely an issue, the harder it is, the more you will put off doing it, so getting an easy clean, easy access cage (big doors) is worth paying for in my opinion :)

That looks like one of those Superpet ferret cages. Space wise they seem amazing and it is also rare to find a cage that large and affordable. I also love the deep bottoms on Superpet cages as opposed to the crappy shallow pans on my cage. The cons of this brand: The levels have little gutters around them to trap pee and waste, and it's a mess that spills everywhere when you remove them to clean them. The construction is fairly cheap. Everything attaches with these little plastic tabs. I have a Superpet cage that I use for new babies and it has lasted fairly well although it has not gotten as much use as the adult cage so I couldn't tell you from personal experience how longlasting they are. But if you're into DIY you could gut the less desirable features of that cage like the pee-trap levels and just build your own out of plastic, linoleum, or other nonporous surfaces. And if you have rats less than around 250 grams they will surely slip right through the bars. If you can avoid a cage that you have to cover with hardware cloth to prevent escapes you should, because it is a pain in the butt.

Ive had that cage and a ferret nation for both ferrets and rats and I personally like that cage much better. Its easier than FN to keep clean

I wish I could find cages like that around here for that cheap. I'd go for it, it's worth a try for that price!

All of my cages are this cage or creations built from this type of cage.

I find them on freecycle, craigslist & down at the end of a drive way on garbage day.

The bar spacing isn't an issue if you have adult rats. Small girls or still growing rats will slip right through the bars.

As for the pee-trap shelves... yup, they can be a mess

BUT............................

If you get into the habit of wiping down your shelves daily. No Mess
If you cover the shelves with fabric & change every 1 to 3 days. No Mess
If you cover the shelves with floor tile you eliminate the pee trap altogether.

Those plastic tabs----- toss them

They are about worthless.

Zip ties are your friend!!

Some people have mentioned their rats chewing holes into the plastic shelves & pans. We personally have never experienced this, so your mileage may vary

Now I'm kind of wanting this cage instead of the Martin's.

I mean, I'm sure the Martin's is better crafted, hands down. But it sounds so heavy, it's nearly $100 more after shipping, this one offers about the same amount of space, maybe a wee bit more, with slightly different dimensions.

I guess I'll have to do a measurement experiment to find out what my boys can and can't wiggle through.

I personally hate that cage. I had it for about a year, but got so tired of cleaning the stupid pee traps and having to power wash it constantly. I got rid of it for my FN... it's still laying in my backyard right now, I can't seem to get rid of it. I tried to sell it for $40 on craigslist, but nobody will take this thing off of my hands.

There are two doors in the front... one at the top and one at the bottom, but they are sooo small. Also, there are doors on the sides, but I could never actually get them to open. They were infinitely stuck. This means, depending on how you place the shelves, there are places that your rats can go where you cannot reach them if needbe. This was a huge downfall, IMO.

If you did get it, you'd definitely want to replace the plastic connectors with zip ties, because they will ultimately break apart if the cage is disturbed in the slightest... at least this is the experience I've had.

All of this being said, bigger is always better when it comes to rats, so if you're looking to upgrade from a smaller cage, then your rats will having all of that extra space. It really is a nicely-sized cage.

I feel like I've seen them for $10 or $20 cheaper but I could be wrong. Shop around.

A lot of members here have that cage and I think the biggest complaints are that a lot of the toys like the slide and tube eventually break or get chewed, and then most everyone hates the pee traps on Superpet cages.

I did go ahead and order the cage this thread is about, as I already own a smaller Superpet, and I love the ease of just dumping out dirty bedding as opposed to shaking off fleece and washing it and all that. I'm going to cover the levels with floor tile so I can just wipe them down daily. I can turn old blankets into exciting new hammocks now and I don't even have to go fleece shopping.

It was the best upgrade I can "afford" at the moment (new 0% interest credit card...lol)
