Are cat biscuits bad for rats? The (very expensive!) food I got from the pet store has cereals, seeds and cat bikkies!

I'm willing to bet the cat biscuits have too much protein in them. I've seen people on here say rats should eat food with no more than 14-15% of their daily value and other people say 16-18%. The cat food and treats I have for my cat is 30-34% which is two times more than a rat should eat.

I don't know, but if they do have too much protein you could just pick them out and only give them to the rats once in awhile.

Sounds like a crap food, whats the brand?

Cat food and biscuits are to high in protein for rats, and only good in small quantities.

Your rats should be eating a high quality lab Block, with fresh foods, and possibly supplemented with a grain suebees mix.
Brands that are good include, Harlan Teklad (very inexpensive and easily obtainable online), Oxbow Regal Rat, Hamsters Living world Extrusions (the ONLY acceptable hamster food for rats), And in a pinch, LM animal farms rat blocks, care-fresh rat blocks, and Mazuri 23% are acceptable.

Harlan teklad is usually about 1 dollar per pound, and is the most commonly used high quality rat block. Oxbow Regal rat is also very high quality, but is also more expensive.

The pet store made the mix themselves - $6 for a bag that between my two growing boys is gonna last less than a week! I think I was a little over excited and not thinking straight...!

I've had a good look and the cat bikkies are few. Still, I will def look into those brands mentioned by kiko. Thanx guys! xoxo.
