Hello I recently adopted a male rat and he's been sneezing a lot. My sister works as a vet tech so I can get Antibiotics cheap through her work cuz I'm family. I don't know the name of what she gave me but she told me how much to give him but it seems a lot. She said 1.5ml but I may have misunderstood and she may have meant .15ml. She's nearly impossible to get a hold of. Between work and school she never answers her phone. That's why I'm asking here for help. He's 1 1/2 to 2 years hold and weighs 1.58lbs/718kg.

You are going to have to get a hold of her. Find out what antibiotic and what concentration the antibiotics are...then we can figure out a dosage for you.

Didn't the medication come with a Rx label stating the type of med, concentration and dose? I'm pretty sure it is required by law...even for family. I would call the vet office before administering any of the meds-- 1.5mL and 0.15mL is a big difference.

They make exceptions... I agree that is a very big difference. That's why I am asking for help.

I'm not trying to be mean but if your not going to help answer my question please don't post. It's a waste of everyone's time and doesn't resolve the issue. thank you for understanding.

Vets are supposed to have this on the labels but often do not...drives me bonkers when trying to help someone!

There is no way anyone could possibly answer your question, since you don't even know the type of medication it is. I asked if it came with a label in case you didn't notice it, or know to look for it.

Thank you everybody for your help! She actually called me back! So I have my answer now. It was 1.5ml but now that I finally make it back to the computer I forget the name of the antibiotic.

Tobyrat: I'm sorry for the way I responded. I asked the same question on a different forum and was attacked for it. I was a little touchy at the time. I know thats no excuse buts all I have. I'm truly sorry!

No worries. :)

Does Baytril (enrofloxacin) or Doxycycline sound familiar? Those are two of the most common medications for rats with respiratory problems.

there's also zithromax, clavamox, TMZ-SMP, Septra, amoxicillin, chloramphenicol palmitate, etc

Try hard to remember because 1.5 ml's is a TON, and I am not sure of any antibiotic that would require that much!

dose Septra at 15-30 mg/kg (I would use 20 mg/kg)...his weight is 718 grams and the septra is 48 mg/ml....his dose would be .3 cc twice a day.
