She had constant health problems through her life but was so sweet, she never liked me wearing socks and would try to pull them off if I was wearing them. As she got to about 20 months she went downhill and dramatically lost weight. We had her PTS on 16th march but didn't really want to write this at the time.

As some of you may know, Lightning broke his teeth. I went sifting through his bedding and found a long healthy looking tooth with a semi-flat bottom but the other tooth is no where to be found. In the beginning I saw maybe a cm(+/-?) of tooth on one side and white in the gum of the other, nothing really extended past. I checked again after having his teeth cut (not immediately, but within a week) and saw the one side growing back nicely but the other side just seemed empty. Both his top and bottom teeth are about the same length now and it is clear, he only has one top tooth.

He still bruxs often and I am trying to keep an eye on his teeth. (Trying to get his mouth open panics him and makes him breath hard. He's being treated for URI.) I was just wondering, will he okay with only one top tooth? Any suspicions as to why one tooth was found so large and the other not at all? (That is more a curiosity then a concern.) I am hopeful he will not need regular teeth clippings. His teeth bled and neither one of us liked it very much.

Meet the now 7-week old Olive (grey) and Pancake (tan)! They are dumbo rex ratties, and just moved in with their older sis, Monkey (she's the older top-eared beige sweetie)- Monkey's cagemate Rudie past a few short weeks ago due to a pituitary tumor :(. Olive and Pancake are healthy, happy, and providing Monkey with plenty of playtime, grooming, and snuggling. They are such a precious addition to my ratty family and are helping both Monkey and I cope with our first ratty loss.

My 3 lovely girls are enjoying the new giant ratty home I made, by combining cages once introductions were complete!! Let me tell you, I got some wierd looks at the Home Depot when I was expaining what I was trying to do (but everyone was so friendly and helpful- it was one of my first "construction" projects hahaha). I put in a picture of it, if you want to know more please feel free to message me!

Hugs and kisses to all your dear and special ratty children! :D

I have a rat who is about 2 years old. About 2 months ago he developed a tumor on his side near his rear leg. It started out as pea size but quickly grew.We had it surgically removed and he recovered well. Well he has gotten the tumor back. This one had also grown quickly but it is ulcerated and bleeding. The vet did some tests but can not say for sure if it is cancer. But she said it is not a good sign that it grew back so quickly and it bleeds. Her opinion seems to be that it will keep growing back quickly even if we do another surgery. My husband and I originally agreed that we would see how it goes and when the tumor got so big it was affecting his quality of life we would put him to sleep. But now I dont know. He is starting to have a little trouble walking but the tumor is not huge yet. I am thinking of doing another surgery but now I wish we had done it when the tumor was smaller so he would have an easier recovery. My husband says it is cruel to keep putting him through a surgery every month. But what if this surgery fixes it and it does not grow back? I dont know what is right. He is enjoying his life otherwise, just a little trouble walking. I just dont know what is best for him. : (

So I got home today and thought my girlfriend had left some watermelon in the cage for my rat, Emmy. However, watermelon doesn't squirm or squeak, so I was surprised to say the least. She had a litter of 6. I thought her being pregnant was possible but was obviously unsure. Now that there are babies, what should be my next step? I've never dealt with anything like this before, and any help is appreciated. I assume its normal for my rat to be protective and nip at me a little? How long might that last? When should the babies start to be weened? When is it safe for me to handle them? I've got a ton of questions but its hard to think right now. When should they be separated? Should I avoid handling Emmy at all for a while? Would this desocialize her at all? If you have any tips for me or answers to questions I didn't even ask, I'm all ears. Sorry for lack of structure in this post. I decided to repost this as a new thread, I guess for the sake of exposure. Thanks in advance.

I let my girls out because I needed to clean their cage. I never got to it. They had a lot of fun being out all night and the next day were happily snoozing in the drawers under the bed. They have made elaborate nests in some of them. So I let them stay out. They have food and water and can get back in their cage if they want to. Day 2, finally got cage cleaned, but they were having so much fun running around, I let them stay out. Now is day 3. They're all asleep in the drawers. Which is kind of neat, because I can open a drawer and peek at them, they don't mind. I just wonder how I'm going to get them back in the cage, because it's not going to be much fun for them after this! Lol

So I just got enough money to finally buy a nice stereo but I just realized, with my rats in my room, will it bother or scare them when listening to my music? I really like my music loud, obviously I'd be more than willing to keep it moderate so as not to scare them, but will it be okay? I don't want to hurt them or make them uncomfortable or anything :( or will they adjust? Please any input is helpful. I have a cat who doesnt care at all to sit in my brothers room when hes blaring his music but of course rats and cats are different.

Males vs. Females: The Age Old Debate With a Twist

I currently have two ratty boys Draco and Scorpius and they are in fact getting up their in age. If one passes, god forbid, I would not like to have him live out the rest of his years alone. However no matter which one passes I believe since they are from the same litter, the other one would not be welcoming to a new rat, much less the three I plan to adopt when the time regrettably comes. Would it be cruel to subject an aging rat to a three new baby rats? Or should I wait until they both pass?

At the same time, my boyfriend and I are split as what to get when do decide to adopt new rats. He wants females but I hear a lot of rumors about females, such as their bigger chewers but are also more active. However, I prefer males, because I love their lazy personalities. I would like some of the characteristics of both males and females if you could. Just general traits would be appreciated. We are split with this issue and because we don't know the exact age of our boys we want to be prepared.

I do know that if we do decide to go with girls, they could not be kept with the surviving rat and that bothers me. But if he would be better off alone I do have an extra cage. I just don't know. This is a really hard subject so I would appreciate all the help I can get.

So yesterday, my boyfriend got us four chickens to add to our collection of animals. They lay their eggs in a converted rabbit hutch, the pen has a fully functioning gate and no way could that poor bunny have got its way into there on its own! He comes home, checks the pen for eggs and finds a rabbit in the hutch :-( so, we are now removing the hutch from the pen and creating a new one for the chickens! Can't believe anyone would have the heart to throw this bunny away.... When I return home tomorrow I will take it to the vets to be sexed, I'm worried it could be a pregnant female someone has dumped! Time will tell....

Considering Upgrading to Critter Nation But Have Some Questions

I am considering upgrading my two ratty boys, Draco and Scorpius to the Critter Nation Double with Stand I found on Wayfair, however this is a lot of money and I was wondering if you guys could answers a few of my questions?

1. How easy is to clean? As in what is your typical routine or how you go about cleaning the cage when it is time. I use fleece bedding and I change it at least one a week. Would I have to change it more frequently and if so how would I secure it? I have heard of binder clips but I worry that my rats would chew the metal and if they did, I assume it would be bad for their health, is this is fact true?

2. Was it worth the large price tag? We all know Critter Nation is top of line but do you have any regrets? We currently have a Super Pets My First Home for Exotics and I wonder since it's a relatively large cage if it's worth upgrading?

3. How easy is it too move on carpet? I live in a carpeted home and I worry I wont be able to move the cage to a cooler room because the room I have to keep their cage regularly becomes very hot in the summer.
