My beloved Sharona died last month, and her cagemate Natalie was lonely. So I went on Kijiji to see if anyone in my city was selling their pet rat, and someone was selling this beautiful girl, who I called Daphne. She's 6 months old and started out quite nervous. But she's really coming around! She rides around in my rat sling, and she'll take treats immediately after I take her out of the cage, instead of needing 30 minutes or so to relax. She sure is a cutie, and she and Natalie get along famously.

Here she is just waking up from a nap. Daphne is the black one in the back. I love her expression, like she just got rudely awakened from a good nap and is turning to see who the culprit was :)

~~Sorry if this is in the wrong thread.~~

So, I thought it would be fun if we told stories about how we got our little ratties!

You can post pictures of them, and tell how you got your ratums :)

My Story:
I went to my friend's house one day. She had two rats that she got from a pet store. One of them was pregnant, and had a litter of 5. They were about 3 weeks old when I saw them. They were looking for homes when the rats were old enough. My mom said we'd take one! I got to pick out which one.
I chose the little runt of the litter. He was the only light colored one. He was a momma's boy too! Well, after I went home, I started doing research on ratties. I found that it would be best to have two. So I asked my friend, and she said I could have two. They didn't know the genders yet (They were new to this sort of thing) And so they would wait to see what the tan colored gender would be, and pair it with the same gender. Well, when they could tell the genders, the little one I picked out was a boy! And his brother which is brown, was the only other boy of the litter! I got the two little boys. I named the tan one Cookie Dough, but Cookie for short, and the brown one Nike.
Tomorrow morning I'm off to Coventry to pick up a 10 week old female, whom we've already named Blossom :) I'll get a proper picture of her soon enough, but for the time being, here's the pic that the breeder sent me :
She's only 4 weeks old, but the lady that gave her to me was going to use her as snake food and this was my only opportunity to get her.

Meet the now 7-week old Olive (grey) and Pancake (tan)! They are dumbo rex ratties, and just moved in with their older sis, Monkey (she's the older top-eared beige sweetie)- Monkey's cagemate Rudie past a few short weeks ago due to a pituitary tumor :(. Olive and Pancake are healthy, happy, and providing Monkey with plenty of playtime, grooming, and snuggling. They are such a precious addition to my ratty family and are helping both Monkey and I cope with our first ratty loss.

My 3 lovely girls are enjoying the new giant ratty home I made, by combining cages once introductions were complete!! Let me tell you, I got some wierd looks at the Home Depot when I was expaining what I was trying to do (but everyone was so friendly and helpful- it was one of my first "construction" projects hahaha). I put in a picture of it, if you want to know more please feel free to message me!

Hugs and kisses to all your dear and special ratty children! :D

So because I'm new, I decided to introduce all my rats to you :).

I got 2 rats from a friend of mine who got them somewhere online. Because they weren't tame at all and very afraid of my friend she asked me to help her, considering I had rats before. Shortly after that we discovered that one rat was a girl instead of a boy, and could be very likely be pregnant (the other rat was a male). She didn't want to deal with possible baby rats and wanted to bring them back to the guy she got them from, which basically meant they were going to be snake food. Which is why I decided to care for them and give them a happy life.

The male rat is basically adopted by my boyfriend and is his favorite. His name is Sahbi, he's probably around 6 months old I think. I'm still working on getting him more tame, he really doesn't like being picked up or being handled.

The female one is called Henkie (which is a boys name :P). She's also around 6 months and she likes to collect everything she can find. Her fur is the softest thing I've ever felt and I love to cuddle her - unfortunately she's not that cuddly and still a bit anxious, but it's slowly getting better. If I can't find something I know she stole it.

Henkie actually turned out to be pregnant (with Sahbi probably being the dad) and soon after I took her in she gave birth to 14 (!!) babies just before Christmas last year. They were the cutest things ever.

10 of the babies went to new loving homes and 4 stayed with me. Scharminkie or Minkie is one of my precious rats, she was really small and a bit deformed when she was born, and sometimes I fed her by hand or kept her warm. Now she's a bit weird, she can stare at one thing for 30 minutes and not notice a thing - I can poke her but she just keeps staring. When she's done staring she jumps around the room acting all hyper. The deformedness is gone and now she's just small, and really good at staring at you with a cute look on her face.

Raceneus is Minkies sister. I didn't want to keep her because she was really annoying and hyper when she was little. Raceneus was Minkies best friend which made me decide not to separate them. Today Raceneus is still very annoying :P she always wants what I have and never leaves me alone - especially when I'm busy. She looks permanently amazed and it cracks me up sometimes.

Herman is one of the baby boys I kept. He looks exactly like Henkie except he's twice as big. He loves to eat and sleep and he's a lazy sweet thing.

Stippie is Hermans brother, he's a crazy one. He doesn't run around the room, instead he kind of hops. He loves to play fight and explore. He's very attached to me, maybe a little bit too much :P

Wow, sorry for the really long post and big pictures, I tried to make them smaller but apparently it didn't work.

First time rat owner and I love this little guy, lots of hamsters, gerbils and ferrets but first rattie. He's about 2-3 months old. He loves to cuddle right under my chin or against my hand if it's cupped and he always settles down when I start petting him. Got him from a Petsmart on Saturday, he's still struggling from new home sneezes but he's happy and healthy otherwise. From what I read he appears to be a hooded rat and I love how he has four big spots going down his spine, seems perfect :p

If he's not running around his cage chewing on everything but his chewstick (might have to get a different kind) he's curled up in his shady corner sleeping like a baby. He's still a bit skittish and doesn't like to be picked up but we're working on it. He isn't interested in his wheel much so I think I'll just get him a ball to roll in, I think he'd like that better. Haven't totally settled on a name for him yet, I'm terrible with naming things, I can never make up my mind so any suggestions are welcome :)

I posted a while back in the behavior section and got some great advice, so I wanted to say thank you! But I also had a funny story. The day before yesterday, it became really apparent that our 2 girls, Kala and Nori, were finally warming up to us. They let us sit and pet them for a really long time and Kala started quietly bruxing! So last night, Nori ran up to my face and pried my mouth open. I'm no stranger to a little rattie grooming! As she was poking around, she found my little plastic lip ring retainer that I put in for work. I felt her pull on it and tried to move her but I was too late, she snatched it right out! At first I nearly had a panic attack, thinking she would try to eat it or something but she dropped it and I just cracked up lol. I went to post this on a certain social networking site and then realized, I really don't want a bunch of people wondering why my rat's head was in my mouth lol. So thanks for being here guys! I know you'll understand!

Having not had rats for many years we decided to go for dumbo rats this time around. We got them from a reputable breeder instead of a pet store and they've settled in beautifully :)

Here are my three ratties, I guess they're still "babies" as they were born on March 27th but between when I first met then at the end of April and when I picked them up a week ago, they became huge!

Edwin! He is a pretty big guy, fatter and longer than his brothers, and when picks up squirms and complains ("Don't cuddle me, I'm a MANLY rat!"), but enjoys climbing on me and becomes a big, licky sweety when I offer him my hands. A few days ago he disappeared into my couch and gave me a terrifying twenty minutes during which I imagined him crushed between the springs that operate the footrests; eventually I pulled up the cover and found him chilling in the back foam comfortably. His talents include wrestling, climbing cage walls, and packing away a truly impressive amount of grapes and celery:

Oswald! A little funny-looking, but definitely my sweetest boy. He loves snuggling in my lap. He bruxed and boggled while cuddling with me and made me feel like a good rat mommy! Snuggling in my sweatshirt is a favorite nap spot of his. In fact he loves me so much he peed on me a little the other day :p Here he is (on left in second pic):
<a href="http://www.ratforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=43282" title="Name:
Dopsy! The smallest rat, and debatably the most conventionally cute, with those huge floppy ears of his. He bears an unusual name courtesy of our Dungeons and Dragons campaign and a fictional friendly rat therein, but isn't living up to his namesake much -- he seems to enjoy handling under certain circumstances, but has been chomping me when offered my hand rather than licking or mouthing :( Makes me feel like a bad rat mommy. I hope I can figure out why so he can be convinced not to!
