Hi!! I'm sure you can all tell  Cheesy but I'm new here! My name is Jenny and I'm a rat addict (hence why I'm here). I've owned 4 rats all together Smiley Smiley

Sally was my first rat. She was an Agouti (I believe that's the color...the brownish color...sorry not 100% positive on the names of all the colors). My mom bought her for me when I was around 7 as my first pet. She's in ratty heaven (sadly only owned her for like 5 months). Not sure what happened to her as I was young then...but it was something I've never seen since.

Mynts (pronounced Mints) was my first rat that I got as a baby. She was all black with a white belly I got her at 4 weeks old and she was born and bred at the pet store that I work at. She was the attack rat and bit my sister's kitten right on the nose (still to this day her cat will NOT enter my room and if we bring her in she will shake and try to run out). I owned Mynts for a little over 2 years. She got a tumor on her by her leg Sad Sad Sad

Hamlet was my love...he was Mynts father which I 'rescued" after my work stopped breeding rats. He was a Himalayan He was about 3 when I got him. He would sit and watch tv with me (while looking at the tv). He had the best personality and was a total mush! He died at around 4 years from old age. I still to this day tear up  Sad
(I owned Hamlet the same time as Mynts)

Casper was my next rat. He was a cute little cream and white baby. He had one black eye and one red. Total love bug and would run to the cage door whenever I walked into the room. He sadly got cancer (I believe it was....something was up with his man parts) and died around the same time that Mynts did.

Right now I'm rat-less but might be bringing home a approx 4 month old female Siamese. She was in bad shape when she was donated to my work. Skin and bones, very lethargic...would not eat or drink...AND she was bleeding down in her private area. IIn the box (with 20 other rats) she hardly moved (these guys were definitely bred for  feeders...not friendly at all and one I thought was going to eat my hand off) and when she did she'd drag her back legs. I seriously thought she was not going to make it.
With some major TLC, Zupreme Fruit Pellets, and some syringes of water she is now very active....normal female energy and didn't want to hold still.

I'll have some convincing to do with my parents as they say "no more animals" but I think she deserves a second chance on life. Smiley

~Jenny

Edit: Thought I might mention that other animal wise I have a Pomeranian, a cat (she was a rescue) and a horse Smiley

Hi SonnyWimps,

Welcome to the forum, your definatly in the right place if your a fellow rat lover Smiley All your rats sound like they were adorable, esp Hamlet.

That siamese doe that was bleeding down below, did she recieve vetinary care? That could be a sign of a serious infection. But your right, she does deserve a second chance at life, keep us updated and post pics if/when you get her! In the mean time, check out some threads and get chatting!

Take care,
Ema-leigh

sadly no...no vet care...try convincing the boss that....not fun.

She was the only female in a box of 20 males and the lady was definitely a breeder as she had 80 rats and about 100 pinkie babies. She was definitely bred and probably just thrown in with 2-3 males at a time. Once I bring her home (if I can) I'll search for a good vet in the area...I know of a few that do small animals but have to call for an approx price as I'm low on money at this time (silly cat is sick).
The bleeding has stopped and hasn't continued for 2 days now.
She seems to have picked up a bit of weight also. And I don't have to use the syringe to get water down her.

Maybe she was just "over done" by males and had a tear. Her urine was fine...no blood in that and poops are fine also (though was a little mushy from the stress of being moved and a new environment.

I'll get pics up of her as soon as I can. I still have some convincing to do with my parents first to let me get her.

Have you considered getting her another friend as well?  She would be a lot better off if she had another rat companion.  If your parents will not let you have more than one or you can't take her to a vet asap, I would hold off getting her and see if you could find someone else to foster and take her to the vet, until you can convince your parents or find her a new home.  Sounds like she's been through a lot and it wouldn't really be fair to keep her alone  Sad  Welcome to the forum though.

I am definitely going to do all that I can to take her to a vet when/if I get her. Sadly convincing her to just get one was hard enough. I had two females originally together (one was mine and one was my sisters) and after about a year and a half they started fighting over food and had to be separated.
There isn't a female her size or larger that I could put in with her...only males...and the females that are there are tiny and would be able to get out of the cage. I'll see what I can do but I think right now it will just be the one. My sister has her rat still so I can put the cage next to hers but her rat is old....would that be mean to put a young rat (maybe 4 months?) in with a older one (2.5 years)?

That depends on what your 2.5 year old rat is like. Rats prefer company (with the odd exception) so it would likely go well, obviously you need to watch and keep an eye on them. I find 4 months old to be relativly mature, as at this age they are considered adult in their colonies and are eligle for breeding. (By a rats standards, not my own!) You will most likely find the older girl becomes young again and is running around like a teenager Smiley I'd say give it a shot and see how it goes, if there is fighting after several attempts you should try find them both seperate cage mates as rats should not be housed seperatly.
