So, today i got my first two rats. One was born 1/31/10 and the other 2/3/10. I could not be more happy about it. The breeder was very knowledgeable and nice. It was about a two hour drive there and back. I just got back, the rats are in their new home calming down. I fed them each a yougie (they took it from my fingers) and i put a sock that i had wore today in their new home (so they would get my scent). I figured I'd wait a day to try petting them or taking them out to play. They are a little jumpy and cautious, but i am assuming this is very normal. Would tmrw be a good day to start taking them out? Or should i today so they get used to me and don't feel abandoned? Or.. should i wait longer then a day? Advice would be greatly appreciated.

I will post pictures soon. Smiley
Thanks.

I'd do as you said first, leave them a day to get used to their new home then start opening the cage door and letting them come to smell your hand. They might come out of their own accord, but then its probably too early if their shy little guys, I'd slowly stroke them once they come to your hand and once they seem comforatable with that gently start to pick them up and take them out. Ive got a girl who hates being taken out of the cage but once she's out she loves it, she plays around and cuddles up to sleep in my neck, so if they seem like they dont want be picked up they will probably be ok once you get them out, (thats to say they arent really badly squeeking or anything).
Congrats on your new babas!

Thanks. They are fine once they are out of the cage. They will play around and seem calm. But.. when i go to pick them up (whether its to get them out or put them up) they refuse to let me. I put my hand down, they sniff it put their front paws on my hand, then run away. Lol. Is this just because im a new scent their getting used to?

They're just still getting used to you. Give them time and use lots of treats so they start to think of you as a good thing.  Wink Congrats on your little rats! Are they girls or boys? Any names picked yet?
