how do i potty train my rats?
I want to potty train my rats because if i do that then my dad said that i could make them a bigger cage out of a storage cabinate.
But i don't know how to potty train them!
can you help me?
(the only reason he wants them potty trained, is because that way he does not have to pay for rat shavings but i can just put flees on the bottom of the cage and so i would only have to pay for the litter).

Potty training a rat takes some time and energy but it's worth if if your rats catch on.
-You need a big enough litter tray! I find that small cat litter trays work best. Mine hate corner trays and any of the smaller trays they sell at the stores for small animals are well just too small. Some like deeper trays like mine do, some don't so you might have to "test the waters" so to speak to find out what yours like. If they don't like a deep pan try using a tupperware style container for their litter tray.
-You need to decide what litter you are using and only put that litter in the litter box. Use a totally different bedding in the rest of the cage. Preferably use the litter they are using now in the tray and something new in the rest of the cage.
-Take the urine soaked litter in their cage, clean everything really really good!!!! Put some of the urine soaked litter in the new litter tray along with some of their poop.
-Now the hard part... clean the cage several time a day! Put all of their poop in the litter tray even move the litter tray if you see they are using one side of the cage more for their toilet area. Make sure to take any bedding out of the cage they have peed or pooped on. Also, wipe down any surface really well after they have peed on it.
-Keep doing this until they catch on. Some are super quick and almost enjoy using the litter box. Some are stubborn and will never be litter trained. Boys are defiantly harder to totally train, but that is because they are determined to pee mark everything. I have 2 of my 3 boys totally 100% trained, but I have one boy who still must pee outside the litter tray.
