odor absorbing bedding
We have a cage where the bottom is wire so the poop and pee go through the wires and fall to the "bedding." The rats do have solid surfaces to go on in the cage as well. They have lots of places to nest in, and things to play with.
I'm wanting to use a litter or bedding that really absorbs the odor. I don't feel like it needs to be bedding since the rats don't touch it, right? So maybe just a certain kind of kitty litter? Or I see from searching on here that people like Aspen?
Do not use clay cat litter at all. It is not safe, even if they can not touch it. It is very dusty and would cause respitatory issues.
Aspen is IMO the best. There are several other bedding topics recently posted under the rat homes section you can read as well.
But I really advise against using a wire bottom cage. It is not good for them to walk on. If possible I would remove it.
