Thread: Red/orange flakes?

  1. #1

    Default Red/orange flakes?

I use to have some boy rats you see, and they would have red/orange flakes all over their fur from their skin. Its like there skin was molting orange and it was going everywhere on my hands.

Just wondering, what is it? I washed and washed and it still wouldnt come out.

Sounds like dried buckgrease, my eldest male is the same because he doesnt groom himself anymore, its nothing to worry about

Yup it was buck grease - perfectly normal. Bathing a rat repeatedly isn't good for their skin and can deplete them of the natural healthy oils. Buck grease will return after the rat is bathed too. I've heard it's better to look at diet e.g. feed olive oil on some toast 2-3 times per week.
