    Default Day 2 with Rats

Just wanted to share a story that, wow, just wow. Rats have already stolen my heart.

Day two with the little ladies. Molly and Mary, adorable, a few days weened off of mama and in a temporary (and reasonably sized) bin cage. (With proper ventilation, space, etc etc. We're in the process of building them a large cage.) I take the bin and place it in the center of my bed, block off a large area, pull the mattress out so they had more area to explore. (My mattress is directly on the floor, no box spring.) I reach into what was once a kleenex box, let them sniff me before I go to pick them up, and put them on the mattress.

At first they were confused, hesitant, maybe even a little alarmed. The two snooped around, and even returned to their cage once or twice before venturing back out. Once they were comfortable, I knew right away their own little personalities.

Molly is a rather shy one, quick and cautious. She'll snatch a cheerio right from my fingers, whereas Mary will slowly and delicately pull it away. Mary was just all over the place and showed more interest in me than her sister. But what was really fun, is when after what was probably half an hour of play, they started to get really comfortable.

At this point both are exploring between the mattress and the wall. Mary's energy level spikes, and her and Molly zip around. I put my hand on the floor, and stomped my fingers and my hand ran up and down. Mary leapt into a game, I couldn't stop laughing.

I would gently cup her, then my hand would scurry away. Once she'd catch my hand (hop on it), I'd cup her again and my hand would go running. She'd chase it in circles and then tumble and romp with her sister. We had to have played this game for almost ten minutes. They were all over me, too. Exploring my hair, sniffing my nose and my lips. I talked to them a lot, too. Think they like that.

When we put them away, they curled up and crashed.

Later on, I returned to see if they wanted to come out for another 20 minutes or so. I let them both sniff me, and pick up Mary who's a bit squirmy and set her on my chest. She held still once I started petting her, but when I went to move her she darted off and went back to her kleenex box.

To be honest I was worried I maybe freaked them out. I let them sniff me again and started to replace some wet bedding at the opposite end of the cage. They watched me, and when I looked back and put my hand up for them to sniff, I couldn't believe my eyes, their little heads were vibrating! I looked closer, and I can't be truly certain because I've never owned rats before, but I think they were chattering!

My hand crept in and I started to gently stroke Mary, who laid down and rested her head. I then pet Molly with my thumb and she curled into her sister.

It was so interesting! They were so tired from running around and playing games and exploring that they just wanted time to sleep haha. Needless to say, they stole my heart. I'm amazed by how different their personalities are, and how quickly they're opening up to me. I already feel pretty much like a member of the family.

If I would have known rats were so amazing, I would've gotten these guys a long time ago.

Rats are sooo wonderful! I used to have 2 rats years (& years) ago in college. This June I saw a young girl buying a rattie and remembered how fun they are. In 4 months I've gone from 0-6 and completely enjoy every minute of it! I'm also so happy to have found a group of fellow rat lovers on this forum - nobody else seems to "get it."

Gal - My eyes have been opened.

Cupcake&Candy - Oh wow, six? Not gonna lie, I thought about after these little girlies grow up a little more and I have them spayed, introducing a little boy. I also thought about going back and getting another rat from the accidental litter I got my girls from. >_> To be honest, the lack of space right now is probably the only thing keeping me from taking on another one of the girls' sisters. (Now when we've finished building their little mansion, that just might be another story. Hehehe.)

I'm incredibly grateful to have found this place too. I was actually supposed to have a rat a few years back. My (ex)friend Will was getting rid of his female. He lived in dorms where they weren't allowed, and she lived in a small box. Yes, an adult rat in a small, small box. She chewed her way out multiple times and he got fed up with her. I was supposed to take her after I got a cage (would've been next pay) but he got impatient and set her loose in DOWNTOWN PITTSBURGH.

I can't tell you how mad I was! In the middle of winter! UUUGGHHHHH. He even thought it was funny! I didn't even know how to respond to that! Needless to say, we don't talk anymore. For this and other reasons.

But now I'm truly educated and knew to get two. They're also 4-5 weeks old and I'm handling them daily. So far so good. Reading through the forums I've learned a lot, and really appreciate the community as a whole. Everyone seems willing to help one another, and everyone actually respects their pets as living things. Such a refreshing change! -ramble ramble-

I'm the same way. I've only had my rats for about 11 weeks now, and they have turned me into a rat fanatic!

Your rats sound a lot like mine personality wise!

    Just a few comments...

First it's so wonderful to read a thread about someone that adopted young healthy socialized baby rats and is having the warm loving rewarding experience every new rat owner deserves.

Second most of us have limited time to spend with our rats, although they shouldn't be alone, I can't reasonably see how a person with a life can spend enough individual one on one time with half a dozen rats to really enjoy them or tend to their emotional needs. Remember the example of the crazy cat lady with 100 cats... she knew all their names because she called them all "Here Kitty, Kitty". Even breeders usually only work with a small number of rats they can reasonably handle and play with. I just adopted a girl from someone that had two jobs, 4 rats and several other animals. My new girl is so neglected she doesn't even know her name or that the noises people make have any meaning. When I asked what my new rats name was she finally recalled it and mentioned she still hadn't gotten around to naming her other 3 rats. My rattie's former mom was actually a very nice person, and our girl was otherwise well fed and clean, but never having been talked to in 7 months leaves me with a lot of work ahead. I have only two rats, but that already cuts the time I spend with each in half, I couldn't imagine more.

Lastly, with our babies, we always try to get them to sleep on us when they are tired. Nothing seems to bond rats closer than sleeping together. It seems to work for human - rattie relations too.

In any case, I'm glad to have you join the pack. And great luck with your new girls.
My rat is smarter than your honor student.

You're so lucky your rats warmed to you right away. I'm a first time owner too but mine are around 4 months old and from a petshop so it's taking longer for mine to warm to me, Getting better though :3
I can't wait untill my boys want to play with me...rather than just nick a piece of food from my hand then toddle off, heh.
I fell in love with rats before i even owned them and having my own two just makes that love so much stronger~

    Have fun with your girls!
