I really enjoyed that! Made my night for sure. Thankyou so much for sharing. It is wonderful to see others appreciating and loving rats. I posted this to my facebook to enlighten more people![]()
That story has really been making the rounds. I hope that some people in the market for a small pet get a chance to read it! There may be hope for the world outside of ratters afterall...![]()
I think the part of the story that really hits home is how first time owners get blind sided by their ratties.
Even though I was a psychology major in college, and had read untold numbers of studies done on rats and worked with lab animals and had a friend that had a rat, who swore it was a great pet.... I didn't expect much from a $2.49 critter. Then every day in every little way, she endeared herself to us then as she grew up she challenged our perception of what a rattie could really do and be.
I suppose if I had bought a dog and he became a family member, I'd sort of expect that after having had dogs before. Even with dogs I've been let down. But a rat that could do just about everything a dog could do, and could genuinely show you affection and tried so much harder to do everything... how could you not but fall in love?
My rat is smarter than your honor student.
This woman captured perfectly, perfectly, how I feel after having taken on Ras. It has definitely made me a parent (as anyone can see by my screenname). I was definitely unprepared. I definitely didn't think he'd live. I've definitely fussed over his health. I definitely lost sleep devoting intense care to him. And he's definitely taught me an immeasurable degree about unconditional love and responsibility that I hadn't learned before.
Not only does she summarize how you can come to love a rat, she perfectly summarizes and parallels my entire experience in finding a 7 day old rat pup that no one would take. She and her fiance found a pup of nearly the same age, with no one else on its side, and took it in. This is simply perfect.
This is adorable. I read it in a magazine last weekend... It melted my heart. Rats have that way of loving you that no one can resist.
Rest in Peace Oliver and babies Charlie, Moot, Vincint and Reoshen.
