Ok, here is the deal with one of my females, he smallest of course. But Ill give you some unneeded information about the others.

Alice, is just a shy female, she doesn't liked to be picked up but lets me pet her. She would rather just hide in her igloo or eat or go to the bathroom and hide behind of little box. I don't mind, as long as she seems content, I can let her live her life out, be it she wants my attention or not.

Maggie, she isn't as shy as Alice. Lets me almost pick her up, but with a struggle, she licks my fingers, comes to the edge of the cage, sniffs, and it interested but not enough to really want to come out. When she does she just would rather hide around me, in my crossed legs, on me, in my hair, anything.

Pepper, she is the smallest most active, most interested rat I have had other then my past female Trixie. She is always ready at the door. Always climbing on the wire front part of the door. She is running around, trying to play with the girls and when I take her out, its like she is programed to go to the closet. I don't know why, she just wants to go all the way over there away from me. After 20 minutes or so of trying to play with Miss Wonder Girl, I put her back and she wants back out. Running around the door entrance, trying to see if the downstairs door is opened. Am i boring her? Does she need MORE time to play? Why does she want to me in the closet so much?

Do your rats do this?

Sounds like a typical female to me...I've always had girls and while they enjoy a few minutes of scritches they really like to go exploring whenever they are out of their cage.

During their hour of free-range time I mostly let them do whatever they want (except eat wires of course.) I also spend time with them individually on the couch while watching tv. There's not much to do on the couch so that makes me the most interesting thing around. This way they get their exercise and some one-on-one time with me.

I think the more play time/free-range time the better.

How old are your girls and how long have you had them?

Btw rats always "NEED" out. LOLOLOL. Its the way they are programmed. Just like they will give you looks like they will die unless you give them some of your dinner. As long as they get out a minimum of 1 hour a day they'll be just fine. Your one girl must find that closet fascinating. LOL

It sounds to me that she has a lot of energy and probably needs a bit longer to run it off. Our youngest is the same way... our eldest will be ready to go home so I'll put them back, but the young one (I say young, but she's almost a year old, now) always wants to come back out again. I usually wait until the older one is settled and sleeping, then I sneak the younger one out for a bit more of a run around

That's normal... both our girls did/do it. Our (almost) 2 year old doesn't any more, but our (almost) 1 year old still does. Ours will go back into the cage like they're done, then turn around really fast and run back out at you again... especially if you're trying to do something in the cage and don't want them to come out at that time. I think it's just excitement, along the lines of popcorning.
