I'd like to get a cage that can fit a maximum of 5 male rats with plenty of extra room for them to play in as well as for accessories.

I've been looking at the Martin's R-695 and thought of maybe just buying a smaller cage from the local pet store i can slap on top to make it a bit larger. but would buying a bigger cage in general be better? and if I just get a smaller cage to fit on top of the Martins for extra room what would be a decent sized one to add enough for 5 males to live pretty? what would you recommend?

if getting a full cage would be a wiser choice then basically I'd like to get a cage that would take minimal extra steps to make rat-safe and I'd like to be able to reach it without needing a chair, but most importantly the area I have to put it probably shouldn't exceed 30 inches in length, width and height aren't much of a factor as long as it isn't over 30".

Personally, I'd just get a bigger cage. Adding on can certain by quite stable and it would be nice for them to have more space than the 695 which can barely hold five if you cram, but personally, I wouldn't want to 'mar' a cage by adding on. This is a personal preference. I'm also not handy, so any creation of mine is like to look like Frankenstein's monster. If you think you can do well enough, heck, go for it. :)

Thanks for the advice, I was thinking of just getting the 3 for awhile then as i added onto the cage get one more and then adding on once more till i got five at which, having a monster of a cage taking up a good portion of my already small room, i would have to restrain myself from any more. I haven't really been able to find a really nice looking big cage that was only 30 "in length so figured gradual add-ons would be a swell idea, but you are probably right that it wouldn't be too attractive of a cage at the end :p

Do you have any idea's for full cages you would recommend for five?

If your boys are full grown, you could just get a ferretnation. It is 36" but thats only +6" but you'd need room to open the doors...
Otherwise, Matin's has some good sized ferret cages. I like the: The New Englander (FNE-480) , myself.

I would definitely go for a bigger cage over smaller ones put together. We put two cages together and it drives me bonkers every time I have to take it apart to clean it... honestly, save yourself the hassle!
