Is it possible for a rat to be scared of open spaces? we used to put Skeetch and his brother on the bed and Skeetch would run for the edge nearest the cage, we built a pen and now he loves outside time(this is only till we Ratproof the room properly), And when i handle him he likes to sleep in my top and runaround in their but if you put him somewhere with no walls he goes for the nearest enclosed space. His brother loves just running around and grooming us and generally being a menace. Is Skeetch Agrophobic?

most rats are little timid of open spaces.you have to take into consideration how they see. close your eyes until you're just looking out from your eyelashes and take away all color. the lighter the eye the less shadow they see. for the most part rats see with their sense of smell and touch and so like to be against an edge most often. there are rats that are just more secure in their surroundings and so stay in the open more but that tends to be the exception to the rule more often then not. mind you give him time to get used to place and claim the territory as his own and he'll venture in the open more often.
