So today I brought my more skittish rat Toby downstairs and was holding him. Then my sister screamed and he jumped out of my hands and hid behind the desk. It took us 30 minutes to get him out. I think we might have traumatized him. Is there anything I can do to make it better? I've had my rats for 3 weeks, if that makes a difference.

for the next couple weeks try being EXTRA gentle with him, maybe avoid any situations where your sister and Toby have to be together. Try free-ranging him on a cleared off bed or somewhere where he can't hide from you then you two can bond and with time he should go back to normal
