So I've been trying to trim O.P.s wayyy over grown nails, and its proving difficult as they are actually at the curling stage. I've tried nail files, and as it turns out actual nail clippers seem to work best, i got one foot done, but then as I looked at his other foot i noticed that he broke off one of his nails.. like right where it starts growing, and its bleeding a bit, (not enough to cause me to worry at all) but I'm not sure what to do with it, should i try to remove it? Could it cause an infection? Its probably causing him pain right? As you can see, I'm a little confused, I know that cats can bleed PROFUSELY if you cut their nails to far back.. is it the same with rats?!

It's probably causing him a little pain, but I wouldn't try to remove it, maybe just dab it with Neosporin Plus (for the pain) and then let it heal. Since they heal so fast it probably won't bleed or hurt him for long.

no its not bleeding at all now, but its just the fact that its probably more annoying than anything. I haven't touched the foot that its on in case of hurting it more... any advice for keeping his nails trimmed without having to whip out the clippers?

Once you have them trimmed to a good amount, you could get him a brick or rough parrot perch and put it somewhere he's bound to walk on it (at the door, under the water-bottle, etc).

He's probably not had a lot of room to run about in the past. :(

that would be my guess to. But something like that can't cause him harm in any way? he is hairless, i'm worried about him rubbing up against it and ripping his skin or something...

i don't think they're fragile enough to rip skin open on a brick by brushing past it or anything, although i know i've had that happen to me enough times to know it that it *can* happen, lol. but unless he trips into it or over it or something (which is how i gracefully do it) i think he should be okay.
