Can aspen for reptiles be used in a rat cage? It's the same thing as typical aspen shavings only reptile bedding is more like long fluffy strands and is good for burrowing reptiles (and I would think rats, too).

Any recommendations for a good quality inexpensive brand of aspen bedding? I buy general pet supplies from Chewy. Is Small Pet Select aspen good? Someone I pet sit for uses that brand for her chinchillas.

Shredded aspen snake bedding is pretty expensive and I don't feel that it's any better than aspen shavings. Because the pieces are quite small, it's more dense and it sits more flat. My boys seem to be less inclined to forage through it than with aspen shavings.

That said, I do use a shredded aspen product. I found a very inexpensive source for giant bales of shredded aspen horse bedding. It's super dusty, though, so I have to spend a ton of time sifting out the excess dust by hand. It's pretty great after that. I don't know how dusty the stuff they sell for snakes is. Now I mix it with aspen shavings to get a better texture.

My favorite brand is Walmart's Vibrant Life brand! Super cost effective and not very dusty (the dust settles fast, so it might be dusty when you're putting it in the cage but it doesn't cause problems!)- it's about $10 for around 20lbs of bedding, which lasts me a week or two with a double critter nation and concrete tub!

It could at least fill two! I can fill one shelf that's about 3in deep and the cement tub and still have at least half of the bag left.
