I just bought a cage that I think my budget can live with and my ratties will enjoy. Only when I opened the box, I realized that the bars are spaced 1 inch apart. Their current cage is about 1/2".

They are 2 female rats, I don't know their age, but I'd guess about 6 months.

Do you think this will work?

Thanks for your input!

If their head can fit through, then they can fit through. Some large females can handle 1" spacing. Some can't. Perhaps hardware cloth or something like that would help?

Hmm...just from looking, their heads would probably fit through. I'll see about picking up some hardware cloth. Thanks!

I think for females, 1" spacing should always be covered. Sometimes they look big enough to not be able to get out, but they may be able to anyway. My biggest girl looked like she couldn't fit through the FN bars, and even tried to get her head out but couldn't, so I thought it was safe. Until I found her on top of the cage one day  Since she could get out, all of them could, but some of my girls never even tried. But it's always better to be safe than sorry! ^_^
