Hi everybody :)

I know you guys probably get asked this a lot, and there is probably a thread I should read somewhere, but I couldn't find it.

What (in your opinion) is the best pet shop rat feed? It would also help if there is a common one (readily available) that is good. Perhaps one I can get on the internet.

I feed Addo the rat food that I bought at the pet shop I purhcased him from, which is fairly standard 'kibble' type food, with seeds, biscuits etc. But I also give him melon, broccoli and lettuce type things in the evening.

Thanks!

From a pet store the best stuff is probably Mazuri. Online you can get Harlan Teklad lab blocks or Oxbow. Most seed mixes don't do their duty and many are to be avoided entirely (like Kaytee).

HT is available from many rescues (Kim's Ark) and online shops (The Rat SHop, Crafty Rat, etc), or in big group orders with various other people. The Oxbow can be found in many different places, search Oxbow rat and you'll probably find something.

With lab blocks, do you feed these to your rat with other feed? Obviously with fruit/veg etc, but I mean, should I just ditch the pet store food if I get lab blocks?

Many people feed Lab Blocks with something called Suebee's mix, which is a homemade mix of grains and seeds and such that's balanced and very palatable to the ratties. And of course the fresh veggies and such.

However, the pet store food may or may not be any good for them at all. What are you feeding currently?

Some foods would be better regulated to snacks, some are better regulated to the trash. :)

Currently I'm feeding him something called "Xtravital". The rat man I got Addo from recommended it, and said never feed your rats hamster or mouse food, etc.

He seems to like this kind of food.

Melon is his favourite fresh snack that I know of, but we're feeding him broccoli also, as I heard this is a healthy snack for rats.

Lettuce, I hear has no real nutritional value to rats, really, but he likes to nibble on it anyway :)

No, not hamster or mouse food. I've heard XtraVital Rat is actually fairly decent, but it can be quite expensive. :?
