Blind Rat Tips?

505 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  pivvo
My girl Oni will probably lose at least one of her eyes today. One of them is huge and dry and needs to be surgically removed. I know rats don't see well, but I can't help but worry about her not finding her water or food bowl. Will she still be able to climb? Is there a higher risk of her getting hurt? I have her in a small hospital cage with two buddies for now because I'm worried about some of the other girls trying to eat the bad eye. Is putting her back with the others after it's healed alright or will she fall from the platforms

Their eyesight isn't great to start with, so having just one eye shouldn't be a problem. They get around great by feel and smell and sounds. I would watch her carefully after the surgery and see how she does on her own, but def put her back with her cage mates as soon as possible, they need each other to be healthy and happy.
She'll definitely never be alone since there'll be two others with her and she'll get to freeroam regardless. I just want her separated from the rowdy ones at night in case they get any silly ideas. The vets haven't called back yet about how the surgery went which is worrying me alot :(

We just got her back two hours ago. She's still a bit wobbly, but fine otherwise. I'm so glad she's home now.

How's your girl doing? I'm thinking about her and the new life she will be leading.
She's doing good now. She ate treats and drank water. I'm not sure if it's the meds, but she's not hostile towards the dog anymore.
