Build a cage HELP please

1457 Views 8 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Jedders
So, every rat cage I've ever owned has been a fish tank... Sometimes I have a cage extender fastened to the top, but still... I'd really like a wire cage that my rats can climb in with platforms they can jump up and down from and climb up the side of... The only problem is that I am NOT willing to pay $200 for one. So I'd like to build my own but I have no idea how I would go about this... Can anyone help me, please?

What kind of materials do I need? (I prefer not to use chicken wire but I will if I must)
Any good DIY rodent cage tutorial videos?
How do I put it together?
What should I use for the bottom? (A plastic tub? What if they chew through it?)

Any help you can give me would be wonderful.

If you want a good cage for less than 200$ then the Petco Rat Manor is a good choice for 2-3 females or 2 males, I got mine new for around 70$. If you want to you can take all the levels out including the large middle level. :)

I was looking at that one but it doesn't look like it has a lot of room to just run back and forth or to add a lot of chewing toys that won't just end up on the floor in a pile.. I guess I want one wider Lol I'm really picky. :p Thank you, though~
Yeah I've been thinking about upgrading too... I built a cage from a lockiing storage bin once but I really don't have the expertise to help XD
That's okay, you replied, so it helps~
So, I mean.

We built a rat cage extension. It came to around 80 dollars or so..
I don't really know your price range/how much space you have

But, it was pretty simple to build.. IF you're handy, this should be easy!

You could always stand it up the other way, too.
I used hard wire cloth and your basic wood frame and staples/screws to hold it together.

I don't really know what design you're looking for. D:

Hardwire cloth would be your best bet, though!
If you provide a little more detail, I'll see what I can think of for you! :3

Ooh~ That looks easy I could totally do that. I just don't know how I would put in platforms or ramps. I'm looking for something a little wider that it is tall... maybe 3 feet wide? with ramps and a platform or two.

Plat forms would be easy, imo.

You could either tie them to the hardwire cloth or hitch them in with something.

I also had poked wooden spindles through the hardwire squares and they absolutely love climbing on them. I would definitely suggest wooden spindles.

They love to climb on the hardwire cloth as well, so that's a bonus too!

It's dimensions are 2 feet wide, 6 foot long.
We also put hinges on it, so the front lifts up and it's super easy to clean/get into!

Let me know what you come up with! Excited to see! :)
