Which would be better for a few rats? In a tank I would have more space for toys and other items. A cage would get better air circulation. The problem with cages is most that are for rats are so small, I have a huge ferret cage (when I had a ferret), but I think only very large rats couldn't slip thru the bars.

Tanks are never good unless you are using them for mother rats with the litter and even so is only needed for a certain amount of time...once they are ready they are moved into a normal cage. You can always convert your old ferret cage by wraping a hardwear cloth or other type of fencing around the cage with zip ties. I have made quite a few cages this way and never had a probelm. Please dont get a tank...they are expensive and a bigger pain in the A** to clean, trust me! lol Anyways good luck and I hope you figure somethign out. We are here to help. :)

No tanks!

There are big rat cages out there, as well. Look at Martin's.

Any cage with half inch spacing will work for any rat, I think.

Any cage with one inch spacing will work for the larger rats.

Everyone covered what I'd otherwise say except...

Are you set on looking for babies? You could adopt some older rats from a rescue or shelter and use the ferret cage with no mods needed. Ferret cages work fine for grown males and some grown females.

There are no Rat shelters near me. In my area there's tons of ones for Dogs and Cats, then further out there's a ferret shelter, but when I do petfinder, the closest in like in SC or TENN. I do want an adult rat, too many adult animals are passed up cause they are old.
