I'm guessing it's a respiratory illness. Rats are unfortunately very susceptible to infections. However, I'm not sure if rats can have allergies to other animals. The owner should call their vet.

Antibiotics can take several days before you notice any improvement.

Sneezes may be an early warning sign of a respiratory infection or they can be a reaction to something in their environment. Dust, environmental changes, air pollutants like perfumes, smoke, scents, etc. can all cause sneezes. The cats might be an issue as well. Rats may sneeze when they're nervous. If the rats are new, it could be an adjustment period.

I had a rat that kept sneezing but when the vet checked her lungs they were clear. It turned out she had allergies and the vet recommended dosing with Children's Benadryl. It helped and I was able to check her lungs myself if she started sneezing again and resume the Benadryl (adjusting dosing to weight).

My last rats were sneezing and turned out they had lung tumours and died at around 26 months old so the antibiotics wouldnt help, they had so many courses it cost hundreds

unfortunately doxy isnt available in the uk in liquid form it seems
the best treatment is usually antibiotics combined with doxycycline
