I discovered a fun little way to keep the rats busy for a little bit. And all for a tiny investment up front plus making use of refuse.

Take a toilet paper tube.
Put a ping-pong ball in one end.
Smash the end of the tube a little so the ball can't roll out.
Put Cheerios in the other end of the tube.
Put a ping-ping ball in the other end.
Smash the end of the tube so the other ball can't roll out.
Place in cage.
Watch rat roll it around and eventually tear it apart.

I plan to mix things up by tying a piece of yarn around it and hanging it from the cage, preferably at least 6 inches from other surfaces.

Another thought is to punch two holes in the middle of the tube opposite from each other so I can thread yarn (or maybe even a straw) through it and hang it up that way. Then not only is it hanging and swinging, but it pivots around the middle, which could pose an extra challenge for a rat seeking a treat.

They love doing this too if you tug it higher when they try and reach it. Like move it up to another level, and they'll scamper up ramps to reach it, only to see it "jump" back down to where they started!

Once my rats found a role of streamers. Came into my room to find streamers everywhere. Looked like they threw a party.
