Hi everyone,

Id just like some help getting the correct dosage for my boys.
(I’m unable to get to the vet due to rioting in Johannesburg , South Africa and nobody knows when this will cease)

I have doxy powder which contains 1250mg Doxy in a 50gram powder.

Please could you help get the correct dosage (suggest a page to help calculate) for my two 600 gram boys and how to create a syrup/suspension with this powder.

Thank toi

Okay, it sounds the product you have is 1250 mg of the active ingredient (doxycycline) per 50 grams of powder. That would mean that there are 25 mg of doxy in every 1 gram of powder.

The RatGuide page on [doxycycline] recommends 5 mg/kg every 12 hours. For a rat that weighs 0.600 kg (600 grams), that would end up being a dose of 3 mg every 12 hours.

In order to be able to accurately measure the powder and turn it into a dose that your rat will accept, you'll need to be able to very accurately measure the powder in grams. You'll need to mix X number of grams of the powder with X number of milliliters of water, some sort of flavored liquid, or a combination of both.

For example, if you mix 2 grams of doxy powder into 5 ml of liquid, you'll end up with a suspension that has 50 mg in 5 ml of liquid, or 10 mg per ml. From there, you can use a weight base dosing calculator to help you with the math to figure out exactly how many ml of the liquid suspension to give your rat. For these figures, I'm coming up with a liquid dose of 0.3 ml twice a day.
