Some of you may remember the two babies I brought home awhile ago who were deemed snake food. I was back in the same store again the other day and sadly the same hairless mommy was still there tending to yet another litter. They appeared to be all rex's. I feel so bad for this momma and Im trying to tell myself bringing her home will only make room for another. But I feel so bad for her. She still has a crusty eye and more than most likely after these babies are sold shell be breed again. I dont know if there just breeding her with one of the males from the breeder tank or what.

Thats sounds awful! But will they let you bring her home if they are purposely using her? The poor thing. I would say report it. But what can you say? Oh they are breeding a rat for snake food. Hmmm there has to be something. You could take her in but if you cant make room take her to a rescue. At least this way her and her future babies wont be snake food and she can get some medical care.

It is awful! Thats why I am fighting with myself...Yea I could bring her home, and try to find homes for the babies (which is hard), I would have room for her to be with my girls, BUT it just opens another spot in the pet store for another one. It just makes me sad how many times shes been bred in such short time. I just cant seem to stop thinking about her.

unfortunately you can't save em all. As much as I hate it snakes need to eat too. And Snake owners need to get the food somewhere. It's just such a sad and harsh chain in nature. But if you feel very strongly about this rat I would take a chance on it. It's hard finding homes but if you wait until the babies are old enough they could go to a rescue.

I would say that if you can't stop thinking about her, go for it. You don't wanna wonder for the rest of your life what happened to her. I'm not trying to put a guilt trip on you or anything, but I know how you feel, and you sound just like me. I know that I would only be upset if/when she's not there anymore...

if she's always on your mind, if it seems like the right thing to do, and you have all the proper funds, etc to take on another rat/litter, then go for it.
i'm sure she'll be so grateful!
i know we can't save them all, but i'm sure we each have a few rats out there who are destined to come into our lives. :wink:

I know if I was in your situation - my conscience wouldn't let me say no. Yes, they'll probably replace her, but all we can pray is that someone like you will come along and save her too. Unfortunately (and this gets me in trouble a lot) I see a rat in need - and it becomes my responsibility to save it.
If you have the room, finances etc to bring her home - I'm sure she'd be incredibly grateful
(of course, if you're subconsciously wanting someone to tell you to behave yourself and consider the fact that it's her this time, but what about next time etc let me know - I can always edit :lol

My biggest fear is bringing her/babies home, not finding homes, and than poof, Ive got lotsa rats.
1st demon says wait and than go get her
2nd demon says how can ya bring her home but not the babies
3rd demon says just wait till the babies arent there anymore than bring her home
4th demon says if I do what number 3 demon says, karma will bite me in the butt as usual and shell be preggie again
Might as well go take a trip to the pet store tomorrow and check things out

Good luck with whatever you do choose. It's a hard choice to make (as nothing is guaranteed, especially with the litter)
I don't think anyone would blame you if you decided to leave it for for fate to decide what will happen to her. You can but do what you can.
Atm, I'm having my own issues. 4 boys (one black self, 3 hoodeds) are now 9 months old in my local pet shop and have been there since birth. Why? No one 'wants' hoodeds in my area (too boring) - they want all the interesting blues etc. I've been telling myself every week 'if they're still there, I'll bring a couple home next weekend' but I KNOW that my time is stretched between my furkids anyway, can I justify four more? My initial idea was to get them, socialise them and then rehome them - but I think it's safe to say that won't happen :lol: I'm torn between hoping someone else has the heart to save them and just going in, bringing them home and getting on with it. It's tough being human sometimes

Currently I have 17. It will be an almost definate 18 shortly when I bring the Tiltie from the shop home (note I say when, not if lol) My time is literally spent free-ranging the rats now from the time I get home from work to the time I go to bed- not that I'm complaining. I love doing it. But some days are harder than others.
It's all up in the air about these little guys though - shall I take two? All four? Arg! It's mind-numbing. It's like asking who you would save from falling off a cliff - your mum or dad?!
Definately go see her again. Can you make a deal with the pet store to 'reserve' her, as such? When the babies are gone, you bring her home with the assurance that frisky little man-rat bits have come no-where near her?

good luck to the both of you with whatever you decide. i was a bit like that when i saw that myst was all alone at the pet shop. i already had 14 - 7 girls and 7 boys - and that was going to be my limit, but then i caved and i now have 15. i went out the next day to try to find a little friend for myst, one her own size, but that would have meant leaving another little ratty on her own, and i just couldnt do it, so i am rotating 5 of the big girls with myst, that way they will all know each other by the time myst is big enough to graduate to the ferret cage... well, everyone except meggsy & loco... i dont trust either of them with myst until myst is big enough to fight back, lol!!

Yea...they arent very nice to me when I am in there, so I doubt they would hold anything for me. I hear ya A1, usually with all the pet stores I need to go into, Im alright. I might not like what I see, but life goes on. And ya know, this rat, she isnt pretty, the crusty eye doesnt help her looks, shes kinda like the charlie brown christmas tree ya always feel bad for.

Well.......................My best friend was at the pet store today. She brought home the little momma rat for me. She knows a few ppl at the pet store. They told her they felt so bad for this girl. Her babies were sexed and separated from her yesterday. She also had a surprise premature litter yesterday as well. All the babies were dead and they removed her from them right away. One of the employees told my friend she held her every day in the morning, and is sweet. They were so happy to know she was leaving for a pet home they even gave her to my friend for $1.50. She is super thin (hairless), and what I thought was dirt on her nose and ear tips, is actually her Himi markings. She will be in quarantine for 3 weeks, I hope she makes it. Now the demons in my head can go somewhere else. Should I be giving her anything extra nutrition wise? Will she look for her babies?
oh and I will not be going into this store again.....for a very long time!

That poor little girl sounds like she's had a hard time of it. I think she'll probably be grateful for the break from babies - I'm sure she knows they didn't make it.
I'd give her a day or so to settle then start her on some high-cal food. Babyfood, perhaps a separate water bottle of Ensure etc. I'm not an expert, but that's generally how I give Jake his 'bulk up sessions' after his URI flare ups.

thank you guys! Umm...she is by far the skinniest rat Ive ever had. Keep in mind she is hairless, so she looks even skinnier, but you can see her backbone much more prominently (sp?) in comparison to my other hairless. There is nothing to her really. Shes tiny. The girl at the store said she gets a reaction whenever shes near carefresh too. Her eyes get irritated. I use yesterdays news in the litter boxes but for now she has warm towels and blankies.
[EDIT] I am gonna let her adjust today and tomorrow, If her eye still seems irritated than shell be at the vet. Is there anything I can do for eyes until than?
