Looks good to me :) You have a lot more stuff in your cage than I do in my double Critter Nation 😄

What is the purple bowl on the cage door? Do you have a water bottle?

Don't feel that you have to have a souped up cage ready for the arrival of the rats. Add things over time as you learn what your rats like and remove things they don't like or want to destroy in seconds. Sure it's nice to have a fancy cage set up like you see on social media but rats honestly don't care what their cage looks like. They just want a safe place to live and an unlimited supply of food and water and toys to play with and people interaction :)

If you do want some ideas, you can check out Pintrest. You can also Google Image search for "pintrest rat cage" and get a ton of images.

Thank you so much! I may have gone a bit overboard, but I misunderstood the instructions of the rescue service I was hoping to use and I thought they needed a photo of a decorated cage sent in (as opposed to just the cage you owned) so I got all my materials together to set it up first 😅

As for the water bottles, I have two, you can see them to the left of the cardboard hide in the second photo, they have green and blue spouts. I heard it was best to get more than one just in case the spout jams.

Hi guys!
I don't have rats yet, but I've just finished setting up my cage (mostly, I don't have a main litter tray for the base yet but that's the only thing missing) and I wanted to ask for some opinions!
Please let me know how I can improve.
Thats a great set up! The only minor thing I would do is add some nesting materials for the ratties to dig through. I tear strips of packing paper insead of newspaper (since my area still uses toxic ink, your area may be different.),throw it in the cage and your rats will go crazy dragging it to their favorite hiding spots to make a big ol' rat nest. 😁

Of course, they may take a while to get comfortable in their new surroundings so you will probably not see them do this right off the bat, but it will definitely make them feel a little more secure coming out in the open if they have some cover to crawl through.

I'm so excited for you! 🐭

That's a really good idea, thank you!

I missed seeing those bottles the first time 😄Two bottles is a good idea. I suggest checking the sipper tubes daily to make sure the ball valve inside isn't stuck. A tap or two until water comes out is plenty.

Rats are happy with anything shreddable as nesting material. Paper towels, store bought crinkle paper (I use this. Not sure if UK sells this or anything similar). old t shirts or towels that are no longer usable, etc.

@AngelofGrace Good job on the initial cage set up! Over the years I’ve come to the personal conclusion that a cluttered cage is a happy cage. (Your first cage is much better than my first cage was, by the way!) This doesn’t mean it should be crammed so full that ratties cannot move, but the more items they can chew, shred, hide in and climb on, the better. As prey animals rats appreciate places where they have lots of options to hide, are they are very adept at maneuvering in and around things. Having a lot in a cage also encourages natural behaviors like climbing in and on and around, stashing food and building nests. Plus it’s a treat to watch them play “hide and seek.” It doesn’t have to be anything fancy or store bought — you already have some great homemade things in there, like discarded cardboard boxes that make great forts if you cut a few holes for rats to enter/exit. They can also be put end to end to make longer rows of houses, or stacked with holes between to make “buildings” several stories high. Old soft clothing (like tee shirts, sweats, etc) can be turned into bedding by cutting it into strips, or taking the sleeves or pant legs, attaching them to the sides of the cage and making hanging tunnels for ratties to climb through. The more they have to interact with and explore, the safer and happier they tend to be. Good luck, and enjoy your ratties!
