Hi Ratfans, just curious to know if anyone is informed on how much fish oil to give rats (under 1yr) with respiratory issues.
My 5 rats have also been on Doxycycline treatment, silver shield and melafix.
Currently two we're honking and were put back on doxy.
I seen on this website aboutpetrats.com/nutrition that dosage is 0.5 ml to 0.7ml daily depending on weight. But ive read articles saying to only give it one or twice a week for the liquid form since its high in vitamins. I am looking at capsules to make it more complicated, since price is high.
I have also heard of a product in the US called Green Mush if anyone knows something similar but Canadian.

Any recommendations or tips against breathing issues in rats would be appreciated.

Hello! I'm not sure about the fish oil, but the rest was prescribed by a vet right? They should be able to help you with the fish oil (I haven't heard of that as a treatment) and give you other tips! URIs can only be treated by a vet, unless it's caused by something environmental (bedding, cleaning practices, humidity, temperature, smoking, air fresheners, etc).

A high-quality fish oil or source of EPA/DHA is beneficial for pet rats. Fish oil helps reduce inflammation, loosens up stiff joints, enhances skin quality and can make a rat’s coat softer and shinier. It can also support immune health, improve allergies and help with cardiovascular function.

It seems to be affective according to many studies. I think there are better remedies out there than antibiotics. But yes Doxycycline is an antibiotic.

And you've taken them to a vet, right?

I would ask your vet about how much fish oil to give your rat. I have heard that small amounts of dark chocolate can help. Steam can also be beneficial, you could bring your rats in a carrier to the bathroom and turn on the shower. I hope your rats get better soon!

Yes I have a cold mist in my room. Also they are shoulder rats no need for a carrier 😁 I personally wouldn't give them dark chocolate since it is listed as a toxic food. Thanks for the response!

dark chocolate is safe for rats and can be a nice treat, although i wouldn't use it for respiratory issues because it takes quite an amount of theobromine for it to actually be effective. imo i wouldn't trust aboutpetrats.com because their care seems to be outdated and i don't agree with a lot of the info on that site, so just take it with a grain of salt. i don't really trust treating respiratory infections with anything other than antibiotics as many natural remedies don't do much or don't attack the problem at it's source. definitely contact your vet though! they'll be able to recommend a safe dosage for you and your rats
