I currently own two guinea pigs, whose bedding is plain anti-pill fleece and uhaul furniture pads (both pre-washed several times to ensure proper wicking/absorbency). the fleece is a pretty top layer, which wicks the urine so it can be absorbed by the uhaul pad below. For the poop, I go in and spot clean 1-2 times per day.

this system works exceptionally well and with two piggies, I only have to change out the fleece/pads once a week. (it really doesn't even begin to smell until day 8-9, but I prefer to wipe down the cage weekly, even if it isn't smelly yet)

Since many people use fleece as a liner for their ratty cages, I wondered if this combo would be a suitable bedding system for rats as well?

That's what I have been using and its probably good for about four day, unless they are peeing heavily in one spot (but I have four rats)
