Id like to allow my girls to free roam everynight for a few hours. Can I get some advice on the best way to start this? I just let them on the floor and just keep on running back to the couch and jumping on it to hang with me.
Here I am giving them all this freedom, and they would rather  walk on my laoptop.. THAT last LOL was actually typed by my rat "baby"! Pretty funny..
I think they are so used to running on the couch with me sitting here that the floor is just weird to them. BUT> I am washing my couch TOO much. Putting a large blanket on it does not help as they just get under it anyway!
Hmm I am kind of getting sick of being peed on.. ha .. I know they love me , but do they HAVE to ALWAYS MARK me? :!: fffffffffff LOL that was Baby typing again! all the fffffff's.. she is too funny! GOD I just love my ratties

I let them hang out in the third bedroom. But they will always try to type.

Secretly I think they want their own usernames.

my three roam my bed and like you said i gave up on the blanket cause they go under it and drive me crazy.
but mine dont pee and i give them frequent cage breaks to drink and eat and pee.

try bringing a cusion or pillow from the couch onto te ground.

I hate letting my rats out to roam a room....I get paranoid that they're going to run or find a new corner I don't know about.....
So I did the easy thing and found some small animal leashes. Not the kind with the separating collar and leash. It's all one string (like a really thin rope) and a kind of clasp near the end that connects to itself and locks into place to make a mini harness. It's completely adjustable to the rat's size, too, which is fantastic. I use it on all my rats, big and small. I just grab one of those, tie it to a longer string, anchor it to something and then I feel safe enough to let them go. It's wonderfully convenient and doesn't overwhelm my rats as much as unrestricted free-range does: Cody won't explore without a "leash" on! He'll just sit there and freak out, but when I put the leash on him he knows he's safe, and he runs off to play. And I know that even if they do get somewhere I don't want them to go, I can always find them. I've never had a rat escape from one....yet. And when that happens, I will no longer swear by these things ^_^
