Two years ago tomorrow, or today depending on whether you're reading this after midnight your time, my Nippy gave birth to a litter of fourteen babies. Two of them went toa good home, and the rest have lived their lives with me. Of those babies, six are still alive. In the year that's passed since their last birthday, we've seen tragic loss, but we've also seen Miracles. And yes, the capital M is deliberate.

Ziggy, showing his age far worse than the others, seems to take comfort from being held and is still able to climb and get around. He comes to his cage door at the sound of my footsteps. Marley, so thin and frail, has survived an illness that she caught at the same time as her sister Arrow, who has been gone so long now. By all logic and statistics, she shouldn't be alive now, but she is. Harper has survived two surgeries, one for a prolapse and one emergency spay and today she's the healthiest of all those left. Cindy Lou Who and Cookie have both had successful tumor removals. Dash has not been so lucky since she has tumors in her lungs. The one on her side can not be safely removed with that. Yet she is alive months after the vet gave her weeks to live, has gained weight to a healthy level, and shows no other sign of illness than her slowly growing lump. Her time is not over yet.

There has been so much sorrow this year, but today we celebrate life. My miracle babies, Ithink of you as those little pink jellybeans, and it seen impossible you are now in your sunset time. Every day with you is a gift I will not take for granted. The day you were born, I did not know how Iwould take care of so many little lives trusted to me. Things weren't always easy, but it was always worth it. You have given me so much love, from jumping to my shoulder whenever I open the cage toat times even licking away my tears, and I would not give up a moment of it. It is certain I will always have rats, but the litter I knew from the day they were born will always be sacred to me.

Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minuets.
Five hundred twenty five thousand moments so dear.
Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minuets.
How do you measure, measure a year?
In skritches, vet visits, new hammocks and bags of yogies.
In bruxes, in kisses, in laughter and strife.
In five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minuets.
How do you measure a year in a life?
How about love?
Measure in love.

Aw I teared up a little. You've had some very tough times with your little babies, but they've also given you great times. You seem to truly cherish their lives and their love and do the best you can to care for them, and you've helped give advice for taking care of my own rats as well. I know that feeling of special-ness from adopting a pregnant rat and seeing her babies be born and grow up a little each day. It's very rewarding, but a load a responsibility and money to take care of all those little ones and you've really stepped up to that challenge and given them the best lives they could have. Happy birthday to your wonderful group of ratties! I hope to see a post next year when you celebrate their third birthday! Happy birthday, you little fuzzies! :)

Thanks. I just looked at a photo I took of them as pinkies. Hard to believe they were that small at one time. My little angels. I wish i could have their babyhoood back, but I treasure this golden time too. Thanks for the compliments and birthday wishes:) I really hope that happens and they'll see another year. Every day is a step closer to that goal.
