HUGE thank yous to everyone who helped The Travelin' Rat and the rescues we've helped in 2014! This was a BIG year for us and we could not have done it without all of the support we had from our fans.

Because of you, we were able to send $3539.50 to rescues and help another rescue earn $323 in 2014. Additionally, we've sent item donations to several rescues for their raffles and auctions.

Two very big things happened in 2014- we were able to pay off all the debt that we incurred getting started (inventory, government fees, etc) and we were approved for 501(c)(3) status! That means we were able to donate more to the rescues than just through our Rescue of the Month program this past year. Going forward, we expect our expenses to be quite low. We no longer have to pay for a Trader's License annually, for one thing. Our fees for incorporation and tax-exempt status have been taken care of. Item donations and handmade items keep our inventory costs down so those items in our store pack a big punch for our Rescues of the Month!

If you are a part of a rescue or support a rescue, please be sure to register or ask the rescue to register with us. Besides the Rescue of the Month program, we also have an Emergency Rescue Fund. Additionally, we have been dispersing money to rescues for such things as National Animal Shelter and Rescue Appreciation Week, #GivingTuesday, and as a Holiday Bonus. If the rescue is not 501(c)(3) approved or is outside of the US, please use the appropriate form as we do try to help you, too, we just cannot donate funds to you.

Please note that there will be a change in how we help rescues in 2015. The Emergency Rescue Fund will not be limited to veterinary emergencies. (The form and information will be updated this January. In the meantime, you can use the current form, describing the emergency and filling in the other necessary details as pertain to it.)

During the month of January, we never have a Rescue of the Month. Besides the fact that we expect most people to be tapped out after the holiday spending, this also gives us a chance to take a break and work on some admin stuff. This year, we will be closing our store for all of January. We'll be up and running on Feb 1 for our February Rescue of the Month.

We can use help from our fans for some of the things we'll be working on in January:

Photo Contest:
FREE for ANYONE ANYWHERE to enter! Ribbons for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in two categories!
The Travelin' Rat will be at the World of Pets Expo in Timonium, MD January 23-25, 2015 and we will be holding a photo contest there. The two categories are Winter/Winter Holiday and Best Personality. 4"x 6" pictures can be entered in one of two ways: 1. dropped off at The Travelin' Rat's table at the show on Friday or Saturday or 2. mailed to The Travelin' Rat.

Partners in Giveaways:
As we are not able to donate funds to rescues without 501(c)(3) approval or outside of the US, we would love to be able to partner with anyone who would be willing to donate to them! The items can be small (as they can be put together with other items), as long as they are useful for rescues. For example, we were able to donate $100 to 3 different rescues for National Animal Shelter and Rescue Appreciation Week, while several generous folks donated treats, hammocks, The Crafty Rat gift certificate, and even an Amazon gift card to the other rescues! Please let us know if you'd be interested in helping this way by emailing [email protected]. It could be good PR for your small business. :)

3rd Annual World Rat Day Auction:
This has been a huge success for the past 2 years! Our fundraisers make possible the donations we send to rescues. If you have any items that you would like to donate, please email [email protected] with a picture, approximate value of the item, and whether or not you are willing to send it to the winner directly (and, if so, where to- US, US & Canada, worldwide, or only within your own country). Raffle tickets sales will start on February 1 and end on March 31, 2015 with the drawing taking place on April 4.

Trek, The Travelin' Rat's Travelin' Rat:
Trek, our Travelin' Rat, will be returning from his trip Down Under. He'll be heading back to his creator, Linda of the Crafty Rat, for some R & R. Then he'll be on his way again. He usually heads out around World Rat Day. If you are interested in hosting him, please email [email protected] with your name, address, and phone number, plus any times that you would like to host him or that are particularly bad for you. We do our best to accommodate your wishes when scheduling!

We have several fundraisers that are always going, so if you happen to be using a search engine, shopping online, selling on eBay, or jonesing for some chocolate, please check them out:

GoodSearch: 1c per search donated to your cause!

iGive: a percentage of each purchase is donated to your cause! You can either go to the site and find your store there or download the iGive button. If you have the button installed, you can combine your donation with cashback at ShopDiscover or Ebates or something similar!

Amazon Smile: 0.5% of your purchase goes to your cause. Plus we have a wishlist of items we can use for our store or fundraisers, like our auction or raffle!

Ebay: You can list your item with a percentage of selling price being donated to The Travelin' Rat!

Rescue Chocolate: Please put code "Travelin Rat" in the notes section at checkout so we can earn $1 per item purchased!

We're so excited to finally be where we want to be! And we couldn't be here without everyone who set up fundraisers for us, donated to us, bought from our fundraisers, and shared our information. THANK YOU for all you have done for us- and the rescues we help!

Happy New Year!

*Donations to The Travelin' Rat are now considered tax-deductible back to our date of incorporation, Feb 6, 2012. We are required to email receipts for a single transaction of $75 or more. If you do need a receipt for a donation in 2014 of either money or items donated to us and you have not received one yet, please email [email protected]. Thank you!
