i was wondering, im not doing well with fabric so im tring to switch. we have loads of hardwood and sticky back plastic lying round the house, and i was wondering if you think it would be a good idea to cover the wood with sticky back plastic (so pee doesnt soak in) and use that in my cage instead of towel over hardware cloth type thing.

I would have thought that covering with sticky back plastic would be harmful, as the rats could chew it (and it is covered in glue obviously). Claws can scratch the SBP and make nicks for them to start tearing with their teeth.

I don't think I'd recommend it. I use those plastic table cloths, with fabric backing, like outdoor picnic table ones. Cut them up, use elastic bands or pegs or clips to attach it to your surface, ie wood or wire.

another option is the linolium flooring! get a yard or some offcuts (its usually cheap) and clip it to the shelving...its thick enough to provde good footing and very easy to simply wipe clean!
