Hello everyone. I'm new here.
I wanted to have some advice & opinions.

I have really wanted to have rats as pets. I've been wondering what the situation is if you have rats around young children? I have a 3 year old and wanted to know if having a young child around rats will prove an issue. Is it better to wait until my child is older?

Any input appreciated

3 is probably quite young to handle/hold the rat (they can have sharp claws and kids may be too rough or hold them wrong) but this doesnt stop you from owning rats, just make sure the kid doesnt mess with it (including sticking fingers through the cage bars, rats might nip thinking its a snack when you do that!!)

Do your research on owning rats first, make sure you know how to take care of them properly and the kind of cage and attention they need (for example will the rats be able to free roam safely if you have children?)

Well socialised domestic rats are unlikely to bite, just take things slowly introducing them and make sure the rats get good trust training. You need to teach the kids how to properly handle them so they do not do anything that could harm the rat (like picking it up by its tail) and teaching them how to recognise the rats body language, which you also need to learn :).

I know my girlfriend has had rats around young children (age 5 and 11) and didnt have any problems, her rats were very friendly and socialised with all the other animals in the house and the kids.
