I live in the Pac NW, and looking to move to the mountains in NW New Mexico, as the Mountain air would be great for my health and the Respiratory health of my 2 Ratlings=Chucky and Leonardo.
Leonardo I'm worried about; hes a Petco survivor I bought for Chucky, he's about 2 months old, and has been sneezing for about 3 weeks. Sometimes he goes quite a while without sneezing then sometimes its 20 in a row, strong sneezes sounds alot like a hiccup. otherwise he seems okay, no other symptoms other than a little much sleeping. I tried the Herbal route, Echinacea, Chinese formulas, Grapefruit ext. etc. and NOTHING!
been to 3 Vets the last a Exotic specialist who suspects Myco and Leonardos been on Doxycycline for the past 6 days. I see a little change but still lots of sneezing, Should I ask for a stronger dose? or a longer course? or ask for a different drug like Amoxicillin? Hes awful young and I'm worried about giving strong antibiotics at such a young age.
Any advice would really help me. And I'm very happy to be able to use this resource, thanks, Spider

first off i love your name! the rat in my id is named Spider.

now, about leonardo. did you see if it was environmental? how long have you had him? what bedding is he on? what detergent do you use on the fabrics (if any) that go in the cage? do you or another member in the house wear an artifical scent? all these COULD be a factor.

illness wise, when you took him to the vets what did the vet do to diagnose him? did they take x-rays of the lungs? there could be scar tissue from a prolonged illness or genetic defect. if it is i'm not sure there's much that can be done to sure it. for the most part it would be just a matter of keeping him as comfortable as possible and hoping he lives a long happy life despite it.

having said all that, if it were me i would keep going on the medications until the end of it and see how that goes. if there's still a problem i would take him for a more thorough look or at least new medications. there are a few different types that are safe for young babies and if worse came to worse then i'd move onto the stronger ones. the thing with respiratory illnesses, they're not all the same so some antibiotics will work wonders while others will have little to know effect. though there are common medications that tend to get them fairly well you could still be unfortunate enough to be stuck with a rarer strain.

in any case keep us updated to his progress and i hope it makes it through alright

I think things are definatley improving, after 7 days of Doxycycline Little Leonardo is on the mend. I haven't heard a sneeze since yesterday so maybe the Vet was right, it just took time to kick in and when I run out of meds next week maybe I'll extend it another week to be sure.
I wish this was all over with cause its a bear to get the meds into Leonardo, I have to wrap a towel around him and force the syringe into his mouth, and then he spits most of it out after, but its gotta be done.
I think its funny how some people make such a big deal about a med resistant Rat, I remember when I was young my Mother and me had some real fights to get the Cod Liver Oil into me, and Castor oil, I screamed bloody murder hit her bit etc. But when it was all over I still loved her. Its the same with my Rats they may fight it but its really just token resistance, the thing is not to get excited, or mad or lose it at all, just methodically grab the Rat ,subdue, insert meds ,put down and pet telling him how much you love him and how much better he's going to feel.
Anyways thaks for your advice and concern, I think things are okay now.
