My rat whose about a year old is acting strange. He sounds congested and seems to be having trouble breathing. I let him out to see if he’d feel better out of the cage but he’s just laying while huffing quickly. When he breathe’s it’s like something is stopping him from breathing through his nose properly. From what I looked up he may have a respiratory infection but I’m not sure, need some help!

Are you in a position to contact a vet for advice? Even if you could start with ringing them, explaining the situation and asking them what you should do. It does sound like your rat is quite unwell so that is what I would suggest.

I'd take him to the vet. I just had to deal with a URI in my one girl and she went on antibiotics for 2 weeks. It wasn't too expensive, around $160ish for the check up and meds (Canada)

It is a respiratory disorder. She needs Baytril and Amoxicillen for treatment.
