I'm Mac I've only recently joined these forums, and they're fantastic. Please answer my question. I have two rats at home; they're very friendly and cute, but I'm wondering if I can get a cat because my last son requested a munchkin kitten for his birthday. So I'm wondering if there will be a war at home or if both pets will love each other.

My son has already contacted a munchkin cat breeder and set up an appointment to meet the breed in person. Also, please assist me. Please visit their website and advise me on this one. Myland Cattery is the name of the cattery.

Welcome!

A multi-species home can co-exist peacefully with the right introductions, IMO. I'm probably an anomaly here on the forum - I have two adult cats and over the years have had various small animals. As kittens the cats were intrigued by gerbils but I always discouraged them from going near the tank. I kept the tank in the bedroom and closed the door whenever I was not at home. Years later I had a series of mice also kept in the bedroom. Neither cat cared for the mice. I now have a rat in a big cage in the living area and both cats ignore it.

I'd be especially cautious with kittens. All kittens are super curious and everything that moves is a toy to play with. If possible, put the rat cage in a room the kitten would not have access to and never let the kitten and rats meet even supervised. This article might be helpful: Cats And Small Furries – TheCatSite Articles

Kittens are a lot of work. They have no manners and have to be taught good behavior while bad ones are discouraged. They need a lot of play time and attention and eat a ton of food. If you have a super busy lifestyle, a kitten wouldn't be ideal. An adult would be better.

I suggest you also join a cat forum to see what age of cat, breed, etc would work best for your family. TheCatSite.com is the most active one online.

And please consider adopting instead of buying. There are tons of kittens and cats waiting for homes. Kitten season is approaching soon and shelters will be full of kittens. Shelter cats may not be purebred or "fancy" looking enough to post on social media but they're no less lovable.

I seriously second this. Not just because there's so many shelter kittens/cats that need homes (esp. adults! I promise you that kittens will be snatched up. But a cat whose even 1 or 2 may struggle to be adopted) but because munchkins are entirely unethical to breed. Purchasing one from a breeder is supporting the continued suffering of those kinds of cats. It's better to at least get one from a rehoming or something, if possible. Kittens are also a lot of work and energy. Unless you or your son are experienced in and interested in training, there's not many benefits to a kitten vs. just a young cat- in fact, I've, personally, had no issue training adults. So, again, seconded. But yes, the two species can coexist peacefully under the right circumstances, such as proper introductions.

Welcome to rat forum! Glad your here!

If your going to get a cat, I would make sure the rats are in a room that the cat can’t go in. 💛
