Well, here's the stereotypes of personalities.

Male: Laid back, squishy, more smelly, mark more, more prone to cuddles.

Female: Hyper, smaller, less smelly, mark less, more prone to playing.

However, for an individual rat, all these characteristics could be different! I have a very hyper, playful male, and a traditional, laid back, squishy male and varying combos thereof. Each rat is different. I can't really advocate a gender, despite my obvious preference.

The only thing I'd suggest is that you do not get ONE rat. Rats do better in groups, pairs at the least, unless you can afford to spend all your time with them as a rattie friend would.

welcome!

wow you are lucky, you have a blank canvas from which to gain knowledge and tips and advice in this forum and other sites on the internet before you choose your ratties! do you want to get babies or rescue ones? i found that once i had two, i couldn't resist more and more and have had to stop at 6!

I have owned males and females, and the stereo types listed by forensic have proven true and untrue in some cases. One of the females i have now is super laid back, and wants to be cuddled all the time, the other is on the go 24 hours a day! the temperaments really do vary, but I'll tell you what, there are about 11 kids at a party at my house right now and I would take rats over kids ANY DAY no matter what sex.
