My name is colleen, but plenty of people call me Mink.
I am 22, and live in NY, the hudson valley.
I have had pet rats for about 7-8 years now.
I have had 5 rats over the years who have passed on, and currently I have 3 rats - 2 elderly females and I just got a baby rattie yesterday, not too sure of its sex yet.

How young is the baby that you cannot tell it's sex?

If it's old enough to be taken from the mother it should be showing its gender.

The shop did not have ages, only sizes. They sometimes have rats for sale as pets but they mostly have snake feeders. A few of my past rats have come from this shop who were also supposed to be snake food, and they were great pets.

The owner only stated that "They" usually send them male rats. I am 5'2", I believe my hands are average for a full grown woman, and this baby, Kane (kah-nay), is the length of my hand, from wrist to finger tips, excluding their tail.
I have had both males and females before.
I even had a young baby I was told straightforward was a boy, turn out to really be a girl lol. Max became Maxine.
Kane does not show any signs of being a boy, but I do not know when is the age where they are not yet developed and the age where they should be showing something and if they are not, it's a girl lol.
Kane's feet and ears are still a little big on em.
Kane is pretty calm and cuddly, a lot more than any females i've ever seen and the shop said they usually get sent males.. this is mainly why I dont just want to assume things.

Well, It definately helps some ^^. Going with these pictures, my baby looks to be close to the 2 week old ones.. so probably 3 or 4 weeks old right now.
My baby looks very similar to the 14 day old male, and nothing like either of the 5 week old pictures.. oh man.

I also looked for nipples.. I can't really find any.. but who knows.
So my baby is under-developed male, or a famale.

Usually, nipples are easy to spot, so I'll bet it's a boy.

3 weeks? That's insane. Poor baby! You might want to give soy baby formula mixed with soy milk. Baby food and cereal (with soy milk) might also be a good thing to try.

And my baby looks a lot like the 19 week old ones so my baby is probably around that age. I'm gonna go take pictures of my baby to post, since I don't think they distinctly look like either the male or female there.

Maybe my baby is older than I think, my guessing of age is only based on those pictures for sexing them afterall.
