I'm on vacation visiting family and my grandparents have several large hickory trees which litters the yard with nuts every year.
I just went out and gathered a good pound and a half of them because I'd like to give my girls some (still in the shell).
But I need to know if they're safe first. If they're not then I'll be taking a hammer to them tomorrow.

My dad use to feed these to our rats. We had two trees in our yard and it would rain hickory nuts when they came into season, haha. I think it's one of those 'depends on who you ask' type of things. If you do I would suggest freezing them for about three days beforehand, they are a favorite for larvae to burrow into.

Thanks! I had a friend from the forum tell me they're safe and to wash or bake them, or both. I'll probably do both.
