👆 That. The other option is to let the rats play in the bath tub / bathroom as long as you rat-proof it. Most people don't have carpet in their bathrooms.
For a DIY play pen, cover the floor with cardboard to keep the carpet from pee soaking in and the rats tearing up the fibers.
