I have the greatest "small animal" vet in the world! She was Gregor's vet, and she absolutely fell in love with him...I could tell that she was almost as devastated as I was when Gregor became terminally ill.
Now, she is Gus' vet, and she's crazy about him, too! He hasn't been in for an exam in a long time...the last time he went in for that, he was only a few weeks old, and he told Dr. Lori (his vet,) "Eep!" So cute! Since he's been healthy and hasn't needed to go in for health reasons (touch wood,) I bring Gus by to visit her every once in awhile, so they can have a relationship, too.
She has two elderly female rats, among other pets. She once had to do two separate tumor operations on one of her own girls. She is very smart, really loves animals, and runs a fairly small, "neighborly" clinic, where you feel like people actually know who you are.
I was talking with her the other day, and I brought up an unusual question, but I thought it was important. I asked her that if anything suddenly happened to me, like a car accident, where I passed away, would she please adopt Gus and take him into her home? (I know it's not likely, but I watch a lot of shows where unlikely things happen to people, and it's always better to be prepared.)
I explained to her, as she already knew, that Gus "doesn't get treated so much like a rat, or even like a person. He gets treated more like a King."
She laughed, and said that she knew how spoiled he was, and that she would be honored to adopt Gus if anything happened to me, and also that she would do her very best to continue to give Gus "the lifestyle to which he has become accustomed."
What a vet! What a person! I don't really have anyone in my life that I would trust with my precious rat, except for her. I think that she is remarkable, to make a promise like that, no matter how unlikely it is to happen.
Anyone have any good ideas about something nice (but inexpensive) that I could do for her next time we go in? (Gus has already given her a custom painting.)
