Last night I noticed my little rat, Abraxas, running in her wheel like she often does at 3am, this didn't really wake me up - What did wake me was the sharp painful squeak she made. I got up to see what was wrong and I was horrified to see a short piece of her tail stuck between the wheel and the cage. I calmed her down and inspected her tail - I was shocked to see that piece of her tail was still there, just that it was missing the skin.

This morning I checked up on her to find that it seems be scabbing up, she seems to be fine. How should I treat this? Any advice would be welcomed greatly. (I already purchased a new, safer wheel.)

Cheers,
Rainer

When their tails are scraped of the skin, it is very easy for them to devolop an infection. Maybe a bit of anti-biotic ointment, or neasporion(sp) on the wound would be okay. I hope it heals well without problems :).

I had the same thing happen, except my rat caught his tail between his water bottle and the cage--neosporin and time healed it up wonderfully.
