I've never raised a rat from a young one before so I'm a little concerned. My young rat (she is about 5 months old) has suddenly gotten very wide. Almost overnight she went from a skinny sleek little rat to one with a very chubby butt. Is this a normal part of growing up? I figure they have to get their adult shape at some point, but this was an overnight transformation.

It doesnt soound normal, useually i would expect a doe to grow to full length then slowly fill that length out to a nice tubular strucutre. Some can end up a bit pear shaped but others stay tubular, the pear shaped ones tend to fill out gradually over weeks and months. I can think of 3 main reasons a rat would suddenly get podgy looking
* a few big meals in a row - in which case she needs a diet
* pregnant or phatom pregnancy - should be easy to rule out the first
*Some sort of health issue such as enclosed PYO, in which case if you rule out the other two i would get a vet to check her, enclosed pyo goes from pregnant looking fat but perfectly fine to deaths door in a matter of hours
