Only two of my pet rats actually use the wheel, but all of them get a good 1-5 hours of outside the cage time so Im wondering if its really necessary to keep it in there. Looking at the photos you can tell which rat never uses it.. (hint its the fat white rat.. but when he's out he gets tons of exercise)

I'm just curious because the cage seems to be quite crowded.

No, that wheel is the appropriate size, but if they end up not using it I would take it out to save the space. If they do use it, then it's worth the space it takes up.

If they use the wheel, I definitely would not take it out. Then that is depriving them of something they love! I could never take my girls wheel away.

Keep it in. Mine looks huge in their cage but it's good for 'em, about 11 or 12 inches :]

I agree, keep it in. We have two of the same cage and both our rats use the wheel. They do have phases where they seem to lose interest in it, but they always come back to it with a vengeance.

Yea keep it in..my rats just sit in theirs...
