I was playing with the ferrets and looking at the ratties. It was so sad, a guy came to get a rat for his snake and it was like they knew cause the all scattered and were in the corner. He picked a white one and the lil guy dove into the other rats and tried to bury himself.

At the store here they have the rats in 6 different tanks, 3 for the boys and 3 for the girls and then by size. I know I should get a small rat cause they are younger, but I can't help but feel bad for the larger ones. Yes they may not live as long, but they deserve a home too.

you're right in a certain sense, it is important to give the older ones a good life before they actually do pass, but petco really isn't the way to do it, try a rescue, there are many rats that already need homes, petco is just contributing to their growing numbers.

I run a rescue and I LOVE to hear someone who wants to get an older rat. The babies, everyone wants. Once rats hit a few months, no one wants them anymore. I have the saddest 7 month old boy who's all alone, is very sweet, needs a home but has a few problems. Since he's a boy with issues, no one wants him. :(

I agree with Renay... Better then buying from a petstore is finding rescues that need you. You can also try local shelters and Petfinder.

you know, sometimes people leave small animals at petco, and petco does an "adoption" thing. that's where i got two of my girls, and they came with "issues": one had a docked tail (and no explanation) and one was quick to bite when startled, but they turned out to be really great pets. so you could check with the petco near you for adult rats you could adopt.
