Edited the title so its clear if anyone is searching for threads on lumps :)

Back form vets, my new lumpy girl (previously condemed by another vet) will have surgery. Everyone has got baytril for the sneezes, cant take any chances with respiratory infections and anesthetics
They said I will probably be able to get a payment plan for the surgery with was estimated at £117

Re: Infection and lumps

i'm sorry but you're going to have to describe that picture. i'm not even entirely sure where her head is. though i think i may see a foot and what i think might be an ear... rats just never sit still for a photo when you want them too eh?

Re: Infection and lumps

I took some more photos but I cant upload them now :?

I belive lumps are described but fruit and veg so..
She has a mamory tumour the size of a large grape and the mass on her bottom is bigger than a wall nut now, it has different sections like a cluster of three or four. She is on Baytril to clear her sneezes and then she should go for surgery on monday. Fingers crossed she'll be groggy but fixed by 14.00.

I dont get the impression she is sore untill the area is touched but I am giving her Ibroprofen (30mg of kg, she weighs 500g so needs 15mg, 100mg in 5mls so 20mgs in 1ml so I am giving 0.75ml Ibroprofen solution. Rat Guide)
Her bowels are moving but are long and thin at times so she has had a little lactulose everyday for 5, one drop really. Today I gave 4 drops and her bowels have moved, several times allready. It comes out sidey ways now because the structure has changed.

Re: Infection and lumps

Shes back :)
Now I know what an unhappy rat looks like-fluffed up!
Shes asleep in the cat box now.

3 lumps removed entirely :) said to give a few drops lactulose each day and make sure she is passing urine and solids ok. Continue with Echinacea. We're to go back next week.
She did see some use in Ibuprofen but wouldnt use it much cus it can affect the stomach and kidneys. Paracetamol can be hard to dose. She gave an analgesic not licenced for rats but seems very safe and easy to dose-injected and lasts 24 hours, she said she might be sore when it wears off but that will stop her leaping about and popping her stitches. She has internal stitches.

So she had-
GA
Vicryl w9826 3/0
baytril injection
metcam injection

Said to only use Baytril if she is sick-chest sounds, lethargy ect as using it routinely will just cause antibiotic resistance and there is not way to totally clear myco its up to breeders to try to breed myco free rats.
She wasnt able to spay her today. She also said the best preventative effects from spaying are when it is done before 12 weeks of age.
She seems like a total small animal fanatic and used to breed rats. Debbie at Glenbrae,
49-51 Stockiemuir Avenue
Bearsden
mostly does surgery but will see a few small animals.
